* I am confused about how patriotism forces one to cheat on one's wife when she's in the hospital with cancer, but Newt Gingrich assures us it was patriotism and not lust or a lack or ethics and compassion that motivated him.

This is me giving that the side eye.

* I was really enjoying the Geektastic anthology. It had a bunch of the best YA authors in it, including Holly Black and my beloved David Leviathon. And then.... sigh. There's a story fairly late in the anthology called "The Truth About Dino Girl." The heroine of the story publicly humiliates another girl for being sexually active. This is portrayed as empowering and good. Um...ick. And now I'm noticing that for all the gay inclusiveness, there are very few POC geeks on the cover art or explicitly inside. I'm thinking there were your classic Asian math/science nerd stereotypes, but not all that much else with the exception of the asian Klingon. Suddenly, I'm thinking Geektastic isn't geektastic at all, which pisses me off as there were several strong stories in there that had enough meat to them that I've been mulling them over in my spare time.

* Why haven't I started Late Eclipses? Because I'm still scary sick. Like, suffocate in my sleep, 15-30 minute uncontrollable coughing jags. I'm sick enough that short stories written for teenagers is a way better idea than long narratives for grown ups, and I really want to give Late eclipses my proper attention. I am not ungrateful, just gasping like a fish out of water.

* The Japanese have been extremely generous over the years when other countries have had national disasters. if you are wanting to help, you could Text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

* There's also a BPAL fundraiser to help the victims in japan: "Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab will be donating proceeds from all March sales of their Shanghai and Kyoto (http://www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com/wanderlust.html) perfumes to the American Red Cross. Black Phoenix Trading Post will be doing the same for all March sales of Shanghai bath oil (http://www.blackphoenixtradingpost.com/bath.html) and Glowing Vulva bath oil (http://www.blackphoenixtradingpost.com/bptpAnthesterion2011.html)."

* Rich Republican politicians keep going on about lavishly teachers are paid. It was pointed out at my social security hearing, that I would have made more money working at a minimum wage fast food job. Think about that for a minute. I was paid less teaching than I was working for Burger King. On my teachers pay I also had to buy and maintain a professional wardobe, a brief case, keep a working car, pay student loans and other debt for ten years of college, pay for my own background checks, office supplies, and continuing education to maintain my teaching certificate. I am hard put to see how that's lavish.

I would like to add, if it was really about actual fact finding, they'd have invited actual experts to testify, but being republicans, they didn't want any facts or reality to get in the way of the self righteousness and bigotry.

No eleven year old is asking for that. Fuck you, New york Times.

One of the reactors that lost power to the cooling system may or may not be in Meltdown.

Fuck.

It's sounding like there is still some hope of limiting the damage, but it's hard to say.

* I'm too horrified by the news from Japan to say anything intelligent about what's going on there at this point. The numbers of the missing are so high it's pretty much impossible to grasp. The scale of the devastation is hard to get my head around. They are still having aftershocks in the 5.0-7.0 range. They are worried there will be another tsunami. They are worried one or more of the other tsunami damaged reactors will go too.

* The newest Republican budget cuts money to our tsunami warning system by thirty percent. After all, what are the chances of a Tsunami hitting any time soon right? And it's not as if there have been any natural disasters in the last decade, right? *facepalm* Things like the volcano monitoring system, earthquake warning system, the tsunami warning systems, and hurricane tracking aren't pork. They save lives. Our systems aren't nearly as developed as Japan's. It seems to me that now is not the time to dismantle what systems we have.

* Remember what I said about how out West where I live, there is real danger from right wing white American born terrorists. They just broke up a dangerous new plot by separatists in Alaska. They also managed to catch a suspect in the attempted white supremacist bombing of the MLK parade in Spokane through good classic police work.

* It's been nearly a week since I've slept more than an hour or two at a time. I'm noticeably deteriorating. I've never been able to sleep sitting up, and lying down isn't really an option either. If I don't make sense, this is why. The amount of intense physical pain involved in even trying to sleep is daunting at this point. I'd go to a hospital if I thought they could help, but I know perfectly well there is nothing they can do.

* Lest we forget during the Republican anti-muslim witch hunt, there were Muslim american heroes on 9/11 too:
