* The Imperial couple has been taking an Interest in Outside. They tend to leak out, despite their shyness of strangers and dislike of unfamiliar things. They are neither of them of a temperament ideal for leash training, but I've dug out Mache's old leash and have been getting them used to it's smell, presence, etc.. I've been getting them to play with it. I am of the school of thought that if I have escape prone beasties, better to do leash training then let them escape and maybe do themselves an injury, get lost, interact with possibly diseased wildlife, etc.. It was an easy choice with Mache and the Butt, both of whom had the right sort of temperament and it really did cut down on escapes for Mache and made both of them easier to catch when they did escape because they'd beeline for their area where I could just pick them up. With the Imperial couple it's right on the bubble. Livia is really easy to get to return under her own power so far, and usually I can manage pretty well will Tavy, but he sometimes hides in the shrubbery and won't come out.
So I'm not pushing it, but going even slower than I normally would with other cats I've leashed trained. The size difference means if it works out for both, I'll need a second leash, but that's a much longer term problem.
Today was Tavy's first leashed outing. I got him playing with the soft end of the leash and draped the harness in position on top of him. He gave it a good gnaw, but was soon ignoring it. When he shifted it, i put it back in place with not reaction. I eventually clipped him in. He put his teeth on me, but it was the gentle warning, not a hard nip or an attempt to flee, so petting him, I carried him out. He did a brief foray up the garden path, rolled around a bit and returned. we did shoulder cuddles on the patio chair and then he decided he'd had enough and went back in for me to unclip him. Not bad for a first time. He didn't go flat or panic and he tolerated the leash well, rubbing it against some things in case it came off, but not making a proper effort with his feet. We'll see how it goes. He and Livia both found the entire exercise baffling, from their reactions, which is understandable.
