* I wrote this elsewhere explaining why I didn't take to Downton Abbey and why Gosford park is world's better. I've said and written versions of this over the years, but I'm posting again, because seriously, go watch Gosford Park if you haven't. To be clear, acting, costumes, set design, attention to detail is brilliant for both, but Downton is fundamentally flawed on a writing level in my opinion.
Downton Abbey is fundamentally conservative. I did find the first season compelling anyway, but by second season it just made me want to go rewatch the brilliant Gosford Park instead. I think I bailed after three? Something like that, on the grounds that it was just a pretty soap opera with politics I didn't much like.
Julian Ffellows, the guy who made Downton was a consultant on Altman's Gosford, so the look and the period detail is similar, but Altman was deconstructing the country house murder story and the period stratified class system in a gay friendly, rooting for the downtrodden way. Mr. Ffellows is glamorizing the very class system Mr. Altman was tearing down with a tropey gay villain as the poison cherry on top.
