* Can we take a moment to contemplate the bravery of teacher Ryan Heber, who stepped between yesterday's shooter and his next intended victim, and with the school counselor, talked the boy down? May I also point out that in this case, words solved the problem without further blood shed, a much better outcome than adding more violence could hope for. Would it work in every situation? No, but I think it's a better answer than firing wildly into a room crowded with panicked teenagers. I'm sorry for the boy who was hurt, but I am very glad things were solved without further injury or loss of life. It could so easly have been so much worse.

* Meanwhile, asshole gun rights extremists are attacking the grieving families of the dead at Newton as fakers.

* I've lost the blue guppy colony (One survivor). However, I spotted all seven tetras and two corys when I was shutting down tanks at bed time. I'd thought I'd lost all the corys as I hadn't seen them in a month. I got crap for sleep between periodic extreme insomnia, the couehing, and Hector being on day three of a howl. So much for gettone things done today.

* What exactly did I mean yesterday about making the choice about cheating or not cheating with a gun to your head?

I mean it both metaphorically and literally. Metaphorically, I have huge sympathy for people past and present who live in a society where there is no divorce or where the social and financial costs of leaving are so extreme as to make the decision incredibly hard and potential lethal in the long or short run. (I consider literal starvation and being ostracized to count as guns, if you see what I mean. I also count things like losing access to your children as a metaphorical gun). I also mean it quite literally. There are situations where the gun, the knife, and/or the fist are literal, where the price of leaving could be death, torture, maiming, disfigurement, hospitalization, etc. for oneself and/or someone you love. That was my situation senior year of high school for part of fall and Winter. That's often the case with domestic violence or in other coercive situations. My case was peculiar in that it was a biker gang with the guns and knives, but that doesn't mean I lack empathy for people in more common situations. Sometimes, you do what you have to do to survive either physically or emotionally. Sometimes those things are ugly. I get that and I don't judge.

In non-coercive situations though? I don't get cheating at all. You can leave or stay faithful, or negotiate some sort of open relationship/poly thing. If it's not a matter of literal survival you can use your words and sort things out depending on what you want. Outside of that deal with the Warlocks, I've always been able to choose and negotiate freely. Acting ethically when there is no gun is pretty easy and I have trouble seeing why people don't as a rule.

* Glee Season 3. I made it through the disco episode. I'm clearly going to have to go back and rewatch some of these if there's time.

1. In retrospect, I keep thinking about Blaine singing "Cough Syrup," his own ignored cry for help, being inter cut with Karofsky's suicide. Kurt fails to spot all the ways Blaine's in trouble just as he misses all Karofsky's cries for help. Ouch, just Ouch.
2. Cooper: where to begin. I really want to see the family dynamic as a group because I think it would answer a lot of questions. The "Rio" choreography? Yikes. Cooper keeps using physical contact as a cover for physical aggression. Blaine responds by mirroring without the violence, pretending everything's okay. If that doesn't nut shell a whole bunch of truths about Blaine, I don't know what does. I'm definitely in the camp that sees Blaine as potentially sexually submissive and into pain, and that he puts all this energy into various sorts of passing including passing for more conventionally butch than he actually is. It seems to me that Cooper pretends to himself that all his bullying of his more talented little brother is intended to make him better, but really it's all about keeping Blaine down. It's not affection, it's violence, both emotional and physical.
3. I am now thinking about Blaine and fight Club. Up 'til now I assumed that the boxing was about a. the violent gay bashing he survived. b. A conventionally masculine pursuit that serves as more cover. Now I'm thinking it's also c. a response to the constant aggression he experiences and has always experienced from cooper. and d. about all that bottled up anger he swims in every day.
4. I know I've mentioned before how much I love Puck's arc. I think the Disco episode really shows how much of a grown up he is compared to Finn.
5. This set of episodes really showed off Mercedes' voice, which I appreciate.
6. Is it just me, or was Kurt wearing the hell out of the silly white suit.
7. Teen Jesus is very pretty, but incredibly annoying. Just saying.
8. I never thought I'd say this, but I think I want more Karofsky.
9. I think I love Unique.
