* Bahrain has found nine medics guilty for being involved in an early Arab Spring uprisings for things like being in possession of non-lethal weapons (medical equipment), wearing buttons urging a sit in, and the like. Many of them were tortured, and it's pretty clearly political. They face imprisonment up to five years.

I know Republicans like Newt Gingrich think we should go back to those days because the children of the working poor "need to learn the dignity of work" more than they need an education that could lift them out of poverty, and after all who would know more about hard work, the children of a single mother working two jobs to barely keep them fed or an extremely rich white man who makes his living giving speeches and doing funding drives? Obviously the rich guy who's never done a hard day's labor in his life. Anyway, as i'm sure Mitt Romney would point out giving people a free public education "is part of the 47%." After all the children protected by labor laws are part of the 47% he vilifies and says he doesn't care about. I mean, I've seen multiple Republicans including the governor of Maine argue that the children of the poor should be yanked out of school to do unskilled manual labour, but I've never once heard them argue that the same should happen to the children of the rich. The Republicans arguing for a return to unskilled child labour say it is good for the economy because they can fire adults making subsistence or living wages and replace them with their own children at half price. This seems to me the opposite of helping the economy, because dramatically increasing unemployment and making it so an even larger number of people become homeless only helps the factory owners. It's also the opposite of what we need in a crisis of demand like we have now, since doubling or tripping unemployment will obviously not increase employment and therefore demand for goods and services. Also, denying the children of the poor a basic education in favour of turning them into life long illiterate unskilled labour is not only a sure way to increase human misery, but a way to prevent them growing up to invent the next big technology, or cure for a disease, or becoming teachers, doctors, engineers, skilled technicians, etc.. This isn't the 19th century. The jobs available for unskilled laborers drops every year, while we are desperately short of doctors, other medical personnel, teachers, etc.. Every time I hear a Republican argue that we don't need free or reduced school lunches because those seven year olds should have jobs so they can pay for their own food, or that we should fire all the janitors in schools and replace them with the children of the poor so they can clean up after the better off children we decided are worthy of an education based on an accident of birth, etc. I feel very stabby indeed. (This isn't a straw man thing. The positions above are actual republican arguments made over the last four years or so as part of various campaigns to repeal child labor laws. No really. Look it up).

The findings aren't that surprising given what we know about the effects of hormones on trans folk,

* Fish Catastrophe update: I spotted an oto feeding, so that's good. It's looking like leaving the patterns overnight dried about half of them. the others look like they will be mostly salvageable.

I just wanted to mention that your Fish Catastrophe is the sort of thing I actually have recurring nightmares about; the whole idea is very upsetting to me and I'm glad it seems to be going less horrifically than it could be. It is hard to responsible for living things.

Oh, I have had plenty of nightmares before it happened.

It's turning out fine to my surprise and relief. I figure it's an opportunity to stock more betas next month.

The otos look a little stressed, but are feeding just fine, BTW.
