I am old enough for the effort to take back the word queer to have loomed damned large for me as a teen. Queer studies has been a thing in academia for decades. The "Queer Community" has been a thing for longer than I've been old enough to vote. I've considered myself queer and used that label for decades. I'm not relinquishing it because the cis LG part of the community suddenly insist that we have no right to it and that somehow we can't reclaim "queer" when they are using "gay" which was also a slur and continues to be one. I absolutely support my friends who choose not to use the word for themselves, but that doesn't mean the rest of us can't choose to use it. It is convenient for a whole host of reasons and has it's own history.
I am not bi, but I am certainly old enough to remember the bi wars of the early '90's when the LG part of the community were busy trying to push all my bi friends out of the safe spaces. It comes around every few years and it is always bullshit. I'm looking at my sofa bed right now as I am typing this. It is currently in sofa configuration and I don't think we've unfolded in a decade. You know what? It's still a sofa bed and if I wanted to move the coffee table, I could unfold it right now. Bisexuals are always bisexual no matter who they happen to be partnered with right now. You know how I can tell exclusion is bull shit? Because I can see the near constant nastiness the LG side of our community and the straights are endlessly pouring down on them. I can see the media endlessly refusing to use the bi or pan label for obviously bi or pan characters. I see the huge amount of effort expended by the LG folks to discriminate against them whenever possible, and it sure looks familiar to my trans ass.
I am not ACE or ARO, but I am old enough to remember the process of my ACE and hyposexual friends differentiating out of mostly the bi and trans ranks in the early to mid '90's. They were always there and always us, they just worked out better terminology to help each other and form a community and start advocating for specific issues effecting them. I remember the A for Asexual getting added and the experiments with two A's so there'd be one for Asexuals and allies both, but people generally dropping the second A and letting it stand for both. The A for Asexual is not "a couple of years old." It is a couple of decades old. You know how I can tell the exclusion is bullshit? Because I've seen the nasty, discriminatory crap heaped on my Asexual and hyposexual friends from the both the straights and the LG community and the language it's done in is often identical to the filth the TERFs put out to target and harm transwomen, even though transwomen of colour pretty much founded the modern movement and the transwomen have consistently been the ones putting their lives and bodies on the line for the rest of us. So when I see the same damned hate speech aimed at asexual people, I know it's the same ugly discriminatory bullshit and that ACE/ARO etc. belong in this community and they are us.
And don't even start me on how bullshit it is to push the "dump the T" crap, or the tendency to exclude intersex folk just generally.
We ARE a community and we NEED each other for mutual protection and the improvement of conditions. Fuck the "I got mine" attitude portions of the LG segment are spewing post marriage equality and DADT. We were there for you. Time to put in a little elbow grease for the rest of us.
And yes, I know it's not the whole cis LG crowd doing it, but it's up to the rest of y'all to have our backs when we aren't there to defend ourselves.

* I've been watching some old things from the 60′s and ‘70′s with Maggie Smith in them. Up until now, I've had a hard time seeing the resemblance between her and her son, but watching her in these pieces is eerie. She will tilt her head or twitch her lips a certain way, and suddenly I'll see Toby Stephens. There are moments when they look so alike it is utterly haunting, like seeing them both at once, and then she'll move again or change her expression and it's gone as if it never was.

* GoT Finale: So how did Varys get from Meereen to Dorne to Meereen again in the time covered in the episode? It's not quite as bad as Sand Snakes watching a ship sail away from the docks at the end of season five and teleporting on to the same ship at the beginning of six, but it's close. I've been having this trouble a lot this season. Characters are constantly teleporting massive distances, including the entire Islander fleet. I know it's a small thing in a season when everything is random and there is no consistent character motivation and people do pointless things for no reason, but the teleportation sticks out to the point of deliberately mocking the audience. IE: D&D think the audience is so stupid they won't notice. I suppose they are right as the mess keeps getting critical praise despite having started unravelling in third season, forth season making no sense, and the fifth and sixth being pretty much unwatchable. I'd been hanging on because of GoB and to keep up with discourse, but I'm not sure I can choke down anymore of this nonsense, even when it's pretty nonsense.
