* My lungs went ugly last night and I'm generally ick. Of course they waited until after I saw the doctor. Of course. I had to go out today, but wore one of the good masks, since it is not possible to tell if it's allergies, chronic stuff, or something new. I think I'm going to try going back to bed in hopes that helps.
* Women's World Championship skating: Mirai Nagasu always breaks my heart a little. She is so good at the emotive, connecting to the crowd part, the Gatsby routine really suits her, and she's so close to really good, but she gets routinely fucked over by the establishment for whatever reason and is often uneven. Here she had a good state with fine jumps (one serious mistake), but there were these little moments of subtly not quite right. So close to what she could be it makes me ache for her. A touch more precision, a wee bit more grace, a slightly more smooth collection of transitions. So close. It's no secret that I love Mao Asada's skating and have been distressed for her struggle to get her groove back all season. It was so wonderful to see her really pull it together here at worlds. That was absolutely lovely and it feels like she's really back. Elizabet Tursynbayeva impressed me. Seriously, she's just up from juniors, and generally that means excellent jumper, but flailing mechanical looking choreography. Not in this case. She's not skating at the full package level yet, but she's half way there. She already is connecting to the audience and her choreography is frequently emotive. She still got that subtle awkwardness a lot of young skaters have in the first half of her program, but she smoothed out as she continued. I expect her to kick butt next Olympics, because a year or two of Senior competition should season her to where she needs to be. Rika Hongo was energetic and fun. Li Zuun is another so close, but not quite. She's technically very good and her choreography is really interesting, but she's not quite selling it to the audience. Gabrielle Daleman didn't really stand out for me, but given her injury list for this year a solid, workmanlike skate is kind of amazing in itself. Yelena Radyonova is quite the jumper, but had a lot of small mistakes and bobbles. I also feel her choreography was a bit busy, when the music called for elegance, if that makes sense, but I expect I'm in the minority there given the crowd reaction. Yevgenia Medvedeva was so crisp and smooth by comparison. Her jumps were brilliant, head and shoulders above and she looked so polished doing it. She broke the Ladies' Free Skate Record, and rightly so. Satoko Miyahara has been a delight all season and is one of my favorite of the current batch of women. This skate was no different, beautiful to watch and technically excellent, moving and precise. Anna Pogorilaya may be known for inconsistency, but she really pulled it together for worlds with a fine short and free. I enjoyed the skate, but didn't quite connect as much as I ought to the performance for reasons I can't put my finger on. (It could be simply that in her free skate costume, she looks rather like Oxana Baiul who had a similar outfit and similar features and I kept getting distracted thinking of her. Maybe it was that at this point I was too tired to connect emotionally). Seriously, I have no idea what my deal was there as she really did skate a strong program beautifully and I can think of no objective reason for me to be less enthusiastic than the crowd and the judges. Gracie Gold started with a bad fall and while she recovered, it was not up to the level of the best ones. Personally, I preferred Satoko Miyahara's performance, but the judges didn't agree. Despite some minor mistakes, I think this is the best time I've ever had watching Ashley Wagner skate. She's been rather uneven this season, but it was wonderful to see her skating to potential. Look, Gracie Gold is generally more to my personal taste stylistically, but in this instance Ashley was all around better and really earned her silver.
