* I hate that disgusting Tarzan and Jane gender stereotyped fighting over directions commercial, and the tag line about if you are a couple fighting over directions is what you do crap. I keep remembering a time Skye and I took my Mother on a trip to Seattle. We did what we usually did, which is one of us (in this case Skye) drove (because I hate driving in Seattle, though not as much as driving in Denver), and the other sat with the map and directions as we searched for various museums and the like. It impressed the hell out of her because my Mom was used to having to navigate and drive all at once and her father had been the angry never stop for directions type. There we were like two rational human beings bantering in a friendly fashion as we went and our response to getting lost looking for the Asia Pacific Museum was to point out how lovely the neighborhoods were to her in between bits of navigating. It was fun and so much less stressful than the stereotypical way of proceeding. It makes me angry that it's the 21st century and the television is still pushing this nasty bickering sexist stereotype (Real men don't ask for directions; women ignore and infantilize men. Couples must snipe and bicker at each other while traveling bullshit.). Fuck that. I much prefer the every trip is a cooperative adventure, laugh st ourselves for getting lost, ask for directions if you need to method. We'd go on these search for a restaurant in Portland and environs adventures during cons and had passengers comment on how fun the trip was. I don't see why that can't be the model instead: working together towards a goal and treating each other decently, especially partners regardless of genders.

* Addendum in response to a comment on the live journal posting about things like the "silent treatment:" It’s completely unreasonable to expect other people to read your mind. It is particularly cruel if your partner is on the spectrum, which was the case in my second longest relationship. It seems much kinder and more conducive to domestic happiness just generally to communicate clearly and treat each other decently. It’s why my tolerance for sit coms is minuscule. It’s why ads like that infuriate me. It’s lazy and toxic. It’s queasy making the way things like the honeymooners and a host of other 1950′s abusive and borderline abusive so called comedies often are. I grew up in a household where differences of opinion were settled through negotiation, not screaming and nastiness. I feel that the world might be a better place if that was modeled more often in our culture, instead of this 1950′s style gender role crap that is all about cruelty for laughs that is also presented as normative.
