I think there's a non-trivial tendency among archaeologists to label anything one can't identify "ritual object" and leave it at that, doubly so if it could plausibly be a sex toy. There was - may still be, it's been close on twenty years since I've seen it - a huge drawer of "ritual objects" in the National Museum in Dublin that are very obviously loom weights, but clearly have never been looked at by anyone who hand-spun their own wool.
