* 589 are confirmed dead and a couple thousand wounded in a catastrophic earthquake in Yunnan two weeks ago. Numbers keep rising as a lot of mountain villages were completely cut off, so the scale of damage is still being discovered. The disaster is being made worse by the rain and well meaning volunteers clogging roadways, making it hard for AID workers to reach some areas.* There are five new cases of ebola with one more dead in Nigeria. It sounds like all or most of the total of six newer infected there were in contact with the first patient who arrived by plane.

* British Airways and Emirates Airlines are suspending flights to the effected West African countries, they serve, which is sensible.

* Seriously, all the panic over the two Doctors in isolation in Atlanta is unwarranted. The isolation unit there is pretty much ideal for this sort of treatment. The people providing care have plenty of disposable needles, gloves, etc.. The reason is it spreading the way it is in West Africa 1. There is a shortage of single use equipment and a lack of isolation facilities. 2. People are understandably scared to take sick relatives to the hospital (history of atrocities in recent wars, a 90% death rate means people who go to the hospital tend to not come back creating the false impression the doctors are killing people, and traditional healers spreading misinformation deliberately to drum up business). This pretty much guarantees that family members will catch it through contact with body fluids during nursing. In the US, if an infected person steps off the plane, odds are they will feel too crap to be spreading it widely, and if they have the sense to go to the hospital, you get at worse a small cluster and at best, one sick person. For the millionth time, it's not airborne! You need to directly handle the body fluids of a sick person to get it. It is not spreadable before symptoms appear, so unlike, say, small pox, you can't feel healthy and be spreading it far and wide.

* Seriously? No, really, Seriously? From the files of Republicans out of touch with the "reality based community" comes this "War on Whites" bullshit. "Rep claims 'war on whites' being waged:"

* Congressional Republicans want to remind you that it is necessary to spend millions more of the tax payer money on a ninth Congressional study on Benghazi on the grounds that the eight previous witch hunts turned up no evidence of wrong doing despite their best efforts. Remember, redundant witch hunts are a way better use of 3.3 million dollars than rebuilding broken bridges, fixing highways, hiring teachers, feeding people, etc.. After all Benghazi witch hunts are good partisan politics while those other things are good for the country and we should never ever do what's good for the country when we can throw money away on trying to find evidence that isn't there to validate bizarre right wing conspiracy theories.

* Why I love Elizabeth Warren: “We have to talk about what does it mean to be a progressive. We have to talk about what does it mean to be an American. So let’s spend a minute talking about what we believe.

We believe that Wall Street needs stronger rules and tougher enforcement, and we’re willing to fight for it. We’re willing to fight for it.

We believe in science, and that means that we have a responsibility to protect this Earth, and we will fight for it.

We believe that the Internet shouldn’t be rigged to benefit big corporations, and that means real net neutrality, and we will fight for it.

We believe that no one should work full-time and still live in poverty, that means raising the minimum wage, and we will fight for it. We will fight for it. And let me add to that, we believe that fast-food workers deserve a livable wage, and that means that when they take to the picket line, we are proud to fight alongside them. That’s what it means. You bet.

We believe that students are entitled to get an education without being crushed by debt, and we are willing to fight for it. We are willing.

We believe that after a lifetime of work, people are entitled to retire with dignity, and that means protecting Social Security, Medicare, and pensions, and we will fight for them. We will fight.

Oh, we believe… only I can’t believe I have to say this in 2014… We believe in equal pay for equal work, and we’re willing to fight for it. You bet.

Yup. We’re going to do this. We believe that equal means equal, and that’s true in marriage, it’s true in the workplace, it’s true in all of America, and we’re willing to fight for it. You bet.

We believe that immigration has made this country strong and vibrant, and that means reform, and we’re willing to fight for it. That’s right.

Oh, and we believe that corporations are not people, that women have a right to their bodies. We will overturn Hobby Lobby and we will fight for it.” — Elizabeth Warren
