Jan. 3rd, 2014 08:40 pm* The Medical Situation in South Sudan is alarming. A hospital meant to hold a little over hundred has more than a thousand wounded and people are already dieing in the camps as they are having to drink Nile water in one of the larger refugee camps. Want to help? Sounds like your best bet is Doctors Without Borders, who are providing what small medical help is available in the refugee camps: http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/

* In Australia, climate Change is leading to more and worse wildfires this Summer. The new Conservative government there is responding by taking strong action to remove things like the carbon tax and cutting funding to researchers looking at climate change, presumably in the hopes of worsening the drought and related climate damage. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
* Republicans, alarmed that the economy is finally starting to recover from the Bush Financial crisis, have taken strong action to cut 240000 jobs out of the US economy and cutting annual economic growth by about .4%, in the hopes of setting back the economy by about a year or so. This has the added benefit of massively increasing human misery and homelessness and punishing the victims of Republican economic policies by stopping unemployment insurance for 1.3 million people and 1.9 more in the next few months. This also has the added benefit of disproportionally harming locally owned small businesses. Rand Paul wants to remind you that this is for the good of the unemployed people, because he has the fantasy that it is easier for people to find work if they are homeless and their are fewer jobs available for them to get. *side eye*
I think it's time to ask why Republicans hate the United States so much that they want to do harm to the Country on this scale on purpose.

* Today was bureaucracy, which went faster than expected. (I still need to somehow find time for a document hunt this weekend). I then took Djinni to Costco, where I got a membership for the first time in a decade. (It stopped making sense as there were cheap groceries closer, I was single, and its physically exhausting for me. The store that was closer went out of business and I needed to buy a cheap TV). As you get two memberships for the sign up fee, I gave Djinni the other membership and we went shopping. He was able to get things and load them onto the cart for me and load up the car at the end. It was still about all the energy and pain resistance I had, but the lan is that once a month or so I can take them there and they can do my lifting and I can provide the wheels for them to get their gear home.
