* Rachel Maddow did a whole show's worth of excellent coverage of Nelson Mandela's life in historical context, with things like his influence on our civil rights movement and Regan and Thatcher fighting tooth and nail against the sanctions that brought Apartheid down. It starts here: http://on.msnbc.com/1cpfpAr

I am not taking this seriously until they remove all the bishops and above who helped cover up the abuse and protect priests from prosecution for the systematic rape of children. Until that happens, it's just PR.

They need to start arresting people.

* Re: Romanesque Art:
The shift away from Realism was a deliberate thing when the Romans were experimenting with have co-emperors, one in the West and one in the East, each with a designated successor working as an assistant Emperor. They commissioned a bunch of monuments with four identical faces, each facing a different direction. The idea was that this symbolized that all four were of one mind and unified rulership and that they were always vigilant.

The Christians saw the identical face statues symbolizing four men as being one and decided that doing religious art in which all the faces of the people were the same regardless of station or gender was a good way to show that all people are one in Christ. This is why a lot of Romanesque art looks that way. People often assume that the artists were incompetent, but it was a deliberate choice for both late Roman secular artists as well as post collapse Christian ones.wa

* It's looking very much like when I thought was getting better from Con Crud, I was. This is looking very much like my usual pattern of catching a virus, and just as I'm getting better, bronchitis found the goo in my lungs and started breeding in it. When I went for my shot today, I talked the nurse into finding me a slot tomorrow instead of them making me wait another week. It's at the worst time for me, not close enough to the floor guys, not far enough from them for me to get a nap. I am looking forward to the antibiotics though.

I did get the must do bureaucracy done. I have another piece for next week that needs some things to come in the mail first and includes a document hunt through my permanent storage pile.
