* Today was the first day independent newspapers were sold in Burma/Myanmar since the 1960's. Up to this point there had been heavy censorship by the military. The four papers published in the morning sold out quickly and it's expected more papers will join them. By no means are things perfect there, but I welcome each sign of improvement.

* Republicans continue to ignore the real human misery and economic damage their sequester is doing.

* Yet another oil spill disaster, but don't worry, a law from the 1980's means the oil company is not legally liable for the damage. That would be sarcasm:

* Day four of sleep dep. I did mail my swap and get perishables. I then discovered they opened the Farmer' Market early due to global warming. I got some starts and fresh fruit. I also ha ust used the last of last year's honey. I got another big jar of the Nooksack Wildflower honey I like.

* I really like the Canadian public service announcements I've seen recently. No, this is not a mock of Canada. I genuinely admire their recent series telling men to intervene if they see other men mistreating women which has cut the rape rate by 10% in BC. I just started noticing one telling people how to discourage cougar attacks when hiking. It emphasizes the sharing space and environmental aspect while giving useful tips for staying safe. Given the number of people injured every spring and summer for doing stupid tourist things around wild animals, this sounds like a sensible and practical solution. I hope they do more animals. May I suggest bears and moose next? There are a lot of people hurt messing with those. (Moose are no joke, especially in mating season. They wander into populated areas and idiots walk up to them to get pictures and those are huge animals and extra aggressive in mating season. Do not fuck with moose).

I wish our government would take the lead from the Canadians. We need campaigns like these on our side of the border. Sure I catch them when I watch the Canadian channels, but most folks don't live in border towns and certainly rape and idiots getting hurt by getting to close to wild animals are real issues here.

Hell they had a set on treaty rights and discrimination when I first moved up here that I think would be a huge help in this state, given the frequent legal battles and associated racism that gets leveled every time there's a dispute. I liked the way they had native people explaining the history of the treaties and the history of violations in their own voices. We need more of that here. Sure there will always be racist douchebags, but as someone new to the region it was useful to me to know the specific rights and wrongs when I went to vote. In my case I got them from a regional history course for my teaching certificate and from going to talks where elders told their stories. I think most non-native locals get even less exposure, as I know we do a shitty job of this bit of history in the schools. Having a nice serious of commercials doing 101 on things like boarding schools and treaty rights might raise the quality of debate next time there's a fishing dispute or another reservation land grab.
