Dec. 30th, 2012 05:25 am* It may not be clear that chained CPI instead of cost of living increases based on the standard Consumer Price Index increases means that instead of Social Security going up with cost of living increases so your Grandmother can continue buying tuna, we endorse the idea that she should eat cat food instead. Cost of Living increases are actually not sufficient as they don't take into account the exponential increase in the cost of medical care and medicine of covered by medicare. It's sort of like saying grandma should by her Metamucil and do with tuna all together. The point is that the current system is not keeping up with the copays, otc meds, and extra fees that Seniors pay disproportionately, cutting the money will only dramatically increase human misery for the elderly and harm the economy as every dollar spent on social security is worth approximately 1.70 in economic activity.
Also, remember these cuts are cumulative. Instead of eating cat food for a short term crisis, you cut the increase every year as the price goes up so the number of cat food cans she can purchase to eat gets smaller every year she lives with of hope of finances improving. Imagine what it's gong to look like whe you retire as prices continue to go up ad Chained CPI falls farther and father behind on things like food and rent.... Those are your cat food dinners decreasing too.
Obviously going to chained CPI is a terrible idea both from a practical economic standpoint and a humanitarian perspective. I realize that letting old people starve to increase the over seas bank accounts of the richest 2% is incredibly popular with rich republican congress people who get their health care for free with no spend down or donut holes, but I honestly don't understand why anyone else thinks it makes sense.

It dawned on me at last meds time last night that I forgot to hydrate, like all night. I had tea with meds, then completely forgot to get water, and since I don't notice thirst... yeah. I'm hoping that was the problem and not the pathogen re-surging.
