* I'm making slow, but measurable progress on my long term project to better integrate LM with the clowder. She's coming more often for a turn on the pettin throne and she's letting me give her bed pets during and after Hector feedings. She's hanging out with the Seniorr Beasties more often, though everyone involved is still understandable wary and she still doesn't come to bed with me and the other three, though that's her one on one time with Squirrel, so it's less worrying than it would otherwise be.

* I'm working on a new cupcake flavour, tonight being a test of concept, to see if the core flavours work together. I think the idea is sound, but I need to tinker with proportions. these are edible, but not exciting.

* Olympics Day 3: I was officially sick of the races as of Day 2. I always burn out on them quickly, but this may be a record. The North Korean athlete giving "Dear Leader" all the credit for winning the medal hurt my heart.

Watching the men's synchro diving, I ended up rooting for the Mexicans because they were risk takers and I liked their body language and great Britain because they aren't big medal winners and I'm all for them winning stuff when they are hosting. I know the basics, but honestly I don't care about the technicalities of diving so much as the simple joy of watching people do gorgeous tricks I can't imagine being able to do if I spent worked my whole life trying. Seriously, to me platform divers could just as easily fly around the room doing aerial acrobatics under their own power and it would be only slightly more magical to me. Anyway, watching the Mexican team move up the rankings was pretty exciting. Yay, Mexico! Watching GB botched the forth and fifth dives so badly even I could see it was wince making. There was something beautiful about the Ukrainians coming out and giving their all on a last dive in a contest that had already been settled as a perfect score wouldn't have been enough to bump the US out of the bronze.

I love that 5'9" qualifies a gymnast as a "big guy. Poor Koji Yamamuro. Ouch! Looks like the pommel horse ate the US team this time. I feel terrible for John Orozco just generally. I was so excited for him on the weekend and seeing his performance fall apart today. Heartbreaking. Speaking of unbelievable perfection, Kristian Thomas' vault? Damn! And Kōhei Uchimura's high bar and floor? Visual poetry. I was so excited for Great Britain's team. I actually wept a little when the youngest guy (Sam Oldham?) fell off the bar. They were beautiful on the floor. Yes, I was totally rooting for Japan and GBR this time. There are no words for how happy I am for the British team. If I'm not mistaken, it's their first team gymnastics medal since the 1928 women's team. They had one good gymnast four years ago and now they have a whole team. It just blows me the fuck away. At the same time I was heartbroken for the Japanese team and Kōhei Uchimura in particular. It was heartbreaking when the poor kid who was a replacement and hadn't had a chance to warm up on pommel horse fell. How much worse when it was Uchimura. Yes, they got Silver, but their hearts were set on gold. It also seriously sucked for Ukraine who were told they had had a medal and had it yanked away. Way too much conflicting emotions here really.

* Meta Moment: I'm already falling behind on Olympic coverage, so my days may stop synching. I've mentioned I like the way the Canadian coverage shows a lot of performances for other countries compared to the US. Something else I love is they do their equivalent of Olympic moments not just about Canadian athletes, but other top athletes as well. I love how much hype and human interest coverage they gave Kōhei Uchimura, for example. Ut's gracious in a way that US coverage isn't. (Yes, I'm really hostile about NBC cutting out the tribute to the subway bombing dead. WTF, NBC, WTF! I'm kicking myself for not taping Canada's Opening ceremony coverage instead.) Also, the I just heard a Canadian commentator refer to the Olympics as "the Stanley Cup for gymnasts!" He also said, "Stick it like a lawn dart!" How cool is that?

* Remember how I said I wanted a better look at Mexico's outfits in the parade of nations? Here they are. See? Not close enough for detail: http://gofugyourself.com/fug-and-fab-the-opening-ceremony-the-outfits-07-2012/2012-olympic-games-opening-ceremony-83

Though at least I get to see the flag bearer better: http://gofugyourself.com/fab-the-olympics-fierce-flag-bearers-07-2012/2012-olympic-games-opening-ceremony-50

And how I thought the Fifi flag bearer was scrumptious? For your viewing pleasure, I give you Josateki Nualu: http://gofugyourself.com/fab-the-olympics-fierce-flag-bearers-07-2012/2012-olympic-games-opening-ceremony-27

* Somewhat creepy sign I'm getting older. I was watching one of those Hammer Cushing/Lee films and 1. got mesmerized by Peter Cushing's cheekbones. As in, he's kind of hot for his age. 2. Realized that while when I watched as a child, both actors looked ancient to me, Christopher Lee is not that much older than me in this movie.
