When we first moved up here in ‘98, literally the second place we ate (We arrived in time to grab dinner at the place closest to the motel before sleep. We had one day to find and sign for an apartment before driving back to get our stuff.) was a family owned Schezwan place with a cheap and deliciously savory lunch special. (Hot and savory brown sauce, not the super sweet orange stuff). Skye ate meat and loved their selection for that as well. I tried their other veggie menu items, but this one particular order contained all my favorite things they served.

We went their a lot over the years. They’d see us pull in and start my order right away. They knew our soup selections, so they’d bring our soup with the tea when they came to check which entrée pairing he wanted. We’d chat with the Wife and the husband would always come out to say hi at some point during the meal. His cooking was amazing. This is where we’d go for our traditional non-Christian Christmas Eve dinner.

We would bring friends when we were in town. They once took my oldest continuous friend for my sibling, which was correct in all the ways that matter, except for blood. They knew my Mother, because I always brought her when she visited.

We watched the older girl grow up. We gave them advice for how to get financial aid and later gave the daughter advice when she decided to become a teacher.

We were their through the pregnancy with the second daughter. We watched her grow up from a baby. Skye used to help her with her Math homework while we waited for her food.

When Skye was murdered, it took me a month to go back in. They needed me to explain what had happened because they saw it on the news, but while she had excellent conversational English and could hold a basic conversation, neither of them were ready for the sexual aspects of the crime and the victim blaming and the... all of it really.

I went less, but it always hurt after that on both sides. I would remember his curly head bent over the little girls drawing she was showing us or her homework. I would remember us there together, and it was clear they were remembering them too. So I came less.

It closed during the pandemic forever, and now I drive past the empty eyes of a restaurant that was so full of life and memory. I hope they are alive somewhere and okay, but I’ll never know, and it’s unlikely they’ll know if I made it or not.

I miss them. I will always miss them. It was good knowing they were there making delicious food with those little red peppers I like, even if I didn’t go in for a long stretch. It is terribly sad knowing they aren’t.

Now there is a sign up announcing a soft opening for a new restaurant.

* Tuesday an actual cleaner arrived. The kitchen is very clean. When she was moping, Livia peeked out at the wrong time and the Stranger saw her glowy eyes in the shadowy depths of her fortress of Solitude. This was understandably distressing to Livia. Tavy, on the other hand, made me pick him up to get a better look at her and spent a lot of time staring at her while she worked.

I had the second bad fall in three days after she left, though it was not as bad as Sunday's during which I had nothing at all to grab on the way down and I nearly squashed Tavy. At least my bruising is fairly symmetrical now. The last week plus I've been having arms and or legs cut out at random when I'm trying to use them. The arm thing is super annoying and I keep dropping heavy things. Trips to the bathroom are terrifying. The pain is, as you can imagine, nightmarish even by my standards.

Wednesday we had important time dependent errands which meant an hour and a half less sleep and extra pain, but they were absolutely worth it. We got the essential things done. There was also frustration as I had given away my construction paper a couple of years ago since I wasn't using it, and apparently they no longer sell it locally, which is insane. It was all foam and/or felt mats and/or card stock in the usual places. This is insanity! It's kids home craft season!

Bonus horrible thing: The other Allergy Clinic decided they don't want any new Medicare patients, so I'm likely fucked. I am going to call my medical caseworker during business hours in case she can do the same magic the previous one did last year with dental care and I will see what new doctor can do when I meet them. Realistically though? Fucked.

Oh, and head Millennial isn't getting paid for another month for AID work which hurts both of us.

* Wednesday was productive but so exhausting I couldn't even. Friday they sent a cleaner, who was acceptable, but not as good as the previous three. It's free. She accomplished the main goals. That's all I can reasonably ask for.

Saturday, the engine light came on while I was driving the Head Millennial home. This will be the third trip to the shop in as many months, and I was only just finally catching up on bills. I don't know what I'll pay them with.

can you put wheels on a basket so you can pull items behind you instead of carrying them? I suggest that instead of a wagon because the basket might be esofter to land on.

The really bad one where I almost took out the Emperor, I was crossing a three-four foot space with a cup I'd just used to water the window plants. It's one of three small gaps like this. I fell in the approximately twio foot kitchen gap for the other one I got bruised up in. There is technically a larger gap in the bathroom, but I never fall there as I tend to keep to one side or the other to avoid not having anything to grab to slow or stop the fall.

My legs are most likely to cut out on me in the bedroom, but I just flop my top half on the bed, so it's safest. The bed reall does take up most of the room, and I've furniture aganst the other two walls, so I have an exactly me sized gap for walking on three sides.

It is this stupid. If I hadn't instinctively held on to the cup, I might have slowed but not stopped the fall. I still would have been hurt but not quite as badly. I'd have needed to be using the crutch to have had any hope of not injuring myself, and I tend not to bother for a short trip to the front window and the patio door adjacent plant.

We do have a wheelie basket for bringing stuff in from the car that works to slow or stop falls. It wouldn't be practical for a whiskey glass sized cup.

These things will happen. I mostly note the bad ones in case social services decide 1. I'm not really a fall risk or 2. someone is abusing me if they see the bruises (This happened to me once in my youth, when I didn't think to cover arm bruises and burn marks from work and martial arts training. I had a hell of a time protecting my non-white lover from investigation for a crime he absolutely did not commit. Cops being notoriously racist there as in many places, it was possibly life and death that the nice social worker lady not send cops around to our apartment. I absolutely believe domestic violence screening is essential and life saving, but in this case, the threat was from investigation). It's by way of contemporenious records.

This is why I always have the crutch outside the apartment or the terrible push wheelchair in an emergency.
