Jul. 13th, 2012 08:48 pmIt turned out there was a low budget local film called Safety Not Guaranteed about which I knew next to nothing playing at the Pickford, so I went down to watch it. (I am big on the idea of indie films being shot outside of the usual places, with geographically specific locations and character types, so I support local film making when I can afford to). It was racially problematic and very straight, but the characters were likeable and the one special effects scene surprisingly well done. It's very PNW, with a PNW sense of humor and aesthetic sense, and actors that looked like ordinary people. I rather liked that it left a whole lot of questions for mulling over at the end. I didn't like the racial stereotyping and the white savior aspects. Let's call it mixed bag.
Anyway it was at this point I discovered that my savings withdraw had come through early, so I hit the fish store on the way back. I needed micro pellets and liberty bio filters, and wanted to get some butterfly suckermouths for the medium tanks. (I am slowly repopulating the fallow tanks, with a set of start fish for a new tank every month, plus a little something for the previous tank. I got two suckermouths for the twenty and one for the blue platys tank as they are starting to get algae.) I ended up under budget as they didn't have as many bio filters as I wanted. (They had exactly enough for the tanks I have up and running, but not enough for back up or the ten that's not up and running yet.)
On the way home, the sky was all beautiful blue and fluffy white clouds, but I could see a storm rolling in over the mountains complete with lightening, though too far for thunder. It was absolutely beautiful. I popped the fish bags into the tanks to acclimate, and went to plug in the electricals on the twenty, at which point I discovered I was short a power strip and could really use a second so I could make the plug ins more rational. Sigh. I put my pants on and went back out. The hardware store was already closed. Of course. Luckily, the Rite Aid was open and not only had exactly two power strip twin packs, but a sale on beach chairs. I was wanting another two in case I ever have more guests than the current one at a time trickle. (I got the extra twin pack as in my experience there are never enough power strips and both tanks and electronics are better with surge protection. I'm sure I will end up needing them at some point). Anyway, I went from 30 under budget to sixty over. Sigh.
Miraculously, it was still not raining in the parking lot despite the rain and lightening being visible on the other side of the highway, a neighborhood away. I mean close, as in I've never seen lightening that close up before. Flash! One one thou... Boom! It was miraculously still not raining in my parking lot two blocks away when I hurried into the house, despite there being not enough space between lightening and thunder to count at all. The echo bouncing off the hill behind the house made it doubly loud as you could here the thunder and the echo at the same time. I had just enough time to turn off all the lights and things before the rains came. It was a corker of a storm, though short. The cats remembered thunder from last time, so only LM hid, the rest hung out with me, chilling. That's two out of season thunder storms in a short amount of time. We needed the rain to cool off what was becoming actual summer heat, and the storm was beautiful, even the too close lightening. I've lived out West my whole adult life, yet I'm still ridiculously, extravagantly in love with the beauty of this place, with the size of the sky and all the green and the way a storm looks rolling in over the mountains.
