"As the Star wrote in a scathing editorial, the state of Missouri has refused to track such things as opioid prescriptions and gun ownership precisely because of invasion of privacy concerns (or so they say). But when the subject involves women and their bodies, such privacy issues appear to fall by the wayside. Missouri is not alone in this. GOP-backed laws either banning or making it increasingly difficult to obtain abortions are not about protecting women from dodgy practitioners or making life better for children. Over and over again, the states involved in these efforts are revealed to have higher-than-average rates of maternal or infant mortality and to not mandate that employers offer paid maternity leave. Missouri is no exception. Its maternal mortality rate is nothing to brag about, and the number of Missouri children without health insurance is growing. As the Star wrote in a scathing editorial, the state of Missouri has refused to track such things as opioid prescriptions and gun ownership precisely because of invasion of privacy concerns (or so they say). “The Southern Poverty Law Center's Action Fund also condemned the proposed legislation. “State Rep. Ginny Ehrhart’s proposal reflects a stunning lack of knowledge, coupled with an enormous amount of prejudice," said a statement released by Beth Littrell, SPLC Action Fund senior staff attorney. "Not only does it contradict the overwhelming medical consensus on treating gender dysphoria by professional medical organizations such as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association, among many others, but it also puts children at risk of irreparable harm.” “

* Wednesday, I foraged/died errands. Did essential things around the house, then Squirrel and I went out for a bit. While we were out, we picked up the painted monster pumpkin from friends.

Halloween I was having one of those days were the difficulty level of everything was turned waaaay the fuck up. I did manage the essentials, eventually. I got a lot of extra cad this year in hopes we'd get a whole bunch of trick or treaters, like last year, but alas, Captain Marvel escorted by two middle school aged brother, who clearly remembered I give out handfuls from last year. The little girls was one of the ones who has trouble really believing she can have a handful and not just one, so it took quite a bit of prompting. Luckily, she didn't notice Geoff Peterson Jr. sitting there under his lap full of gourds until after she got her candy, because she panicked a little being so close to a skeleton.

Squirrel and I cracked open the good scotch he got me for my birthday and drank it while watching attack the block.

It's nearly ten, but I leave the lights on until I go to bed, in case stoned/wasted grad students wander by as has happened. The rules ate simple: lights and hospitality to living or dead. I turn no one away, not even two Middle school boys who don't bother with costumes taking a little sister with down syndrome around. Everyone gets a treat. I take those rules seriously.

I think that's one of the things I like about the movie Trick 'r Treat. Oh, I adore the aesthetic, the intricately woven bits of non-linear plot, the kick ass acting, but it's the rare movie of it's type that makes it explicitly about rules that have absolutely nothing to do with punishing female sexuality. Leave the candles lit. Offer hospitality. Don't prey on those you think are weak because of how they look or the ways they are different. Break the very simple rules and retribution comes. Satisfying in the exact way life so often isn't.

Luminarias - look cool in person. Do not photograph well.

And yeah, for some reason, yesterday, it was like everything took an extra step or two. (Also because I was rushing out of the house, I missed the notification that bell choir had been cancelled which meant that instead of being 15 minutes late, I was instead 45 minutes early. I took this to mean that I should really go get food.)

Yeah, the tealight things stayed on much longer than I thought they would. I figured out of the water, they'd turn off, but one stayed on for almost a whole day after. I'm not sure if they finally burned out the bulb or if they'll come back on if put in water again, but don't really want to test it, just now.
