* Wednesday was forage, what with Monday being MLK Day. The forage hours are different Wednesdays, which is lucky as I'm still not particularly functional and the extra time Helped. Still, it was November type weather with high Arctic wind off the Bay driving the torrential rain nearly sideways. The line was long and there was no parking even though I went late enough to hit the usual lull and miss after work rush, so rather than stand out in torrential sideways rain and high wind, I did my library loop first in hopes the extra ten or so minute would improve matters.
The trip was longer than expected as there was a Thing with my reserves and the ILL Archon flagged me down on the way out as she had a book just in for me and wanted to talk about some stuff. It seems this incredibly skilled and hard working Super star of finding obscure texts and DvDs was retiring after more than twenty years running the ILL department. As a result they were changing some policies for ILLs :( because they expect to be swamped with her apprentices trying to keep up with the work of a woman with decades of extra knowledge and contacts. She's going to be irreplaceable and it's clear the library knows it. You don't automatically know things like where the only copy of Saint Lucifer one can ILL borrow in the continental United states is; that sort of thing takes years to pick up.
We were not friends. I know her face from the break room when I worked there and the occasional ILL related conversation sine. I have spoken to her fairly often on the phone. She goes above and beyond and I am always careful to say nice things because I know I often make bizarre and difficult requests and I order a ridiculous number of things from her. People who do this sort of work well and without complaint are a kind of hero of civilization in my opinion, labouring in obscurity and seldom thanked, so I ALWAYS thank her. I did so one last time.
She asked me a question I have suspected she had wanted to ask for most of a decade: Are you doing some sort of big research project? This is in a sense true, though no book will ever come of it, so I owned it, though I explained I also had strange and varied taste in entertainment. I was thinking of that year I approximately doubled the size of our Queer Cinema selection as they bought nearly all of the one I ordered, my prediction for often mostly forgotten reconstructed silent films, the recent super specific ballet performance requests that swelled our collection, the peculiar less mainstream horror films, that time I ordered 4 or so White Trash Zombie books in a row, my tendency to ask them to pre-order all the Seanan McGuire/Mira grants, etc., etc.. (Every ILL one sends in gets evaluated to see I they want it in the collection and if they buy it, they send it to you first. I actually have a pretty good purchase rate on my non-academic orders. I am proud of this. I love when I rest something and a line appears behind me while it's on order, sowing I've tapped into a pent up demand for something the library might not have realized it needed until I ordered it).
We were not friends, but I will miss her terribly, and I will have to be circumspect in my ordering of peculiarities.
The rain paused while I was inside, and I got parking at forage a reasonable gimping distance away, though not in front. The line was still out past the rain awning and snails's paced, so it was way more standing than was good for me, but the when the rain started again it was gentler and the wind not so high. The new computer system was up and running and the hold up had to do with data entering people who hadn't come the last two weeks, so after check in,things were quick and smooth, it was the line to get in that completely thrashed me. The winds were up again by the time I got home, so unloading was an asshole and it was rather a struggle to gimp from far parking. The winds were howling so loud earlier it was like sirens in the hall when I went for mail, but it is calmer now.
* I have this thing where when I come home, I always go and greet the cat. Cats generally like this. It is reassuring, it reinforces group membership, the Hu-Mon often ios covered in interesting smells as well as the familiar reassuring ones. Cats like a little pettin and crooning when Big Friend returns. If one of the cats is not there, as a sort of joke I generally ask the cat that is things like, "Where is your learned colleague," "Where is your colleague from the other side of the aisle" etc.. Today, I asked Tavy where his "Unindicted Co-conspirator " was. Look, I take my smiles here I can find them.
