* Re: Dallas Ebola case: Apparently he caught it helping take the landlord's daughter to the hospital. She and her uncle have died, since she was turned away from the hospital, and the Uncle nursed her. He really did tell the nurse he had been in Liberia and had potentially been exposed, as it made it into her chart notes. Someone higher up the treatment chain ignored that and sent him home with antibiotics, which are useless for viral infections. The authorities have contacted all the family and friends who may have been exposed in Dallas and are taking the risk seriously.

Again, it is way too soon to panic if you live in a country with a functioning health care system.

Here is the Donate link to Doctors Without Borders. They are the most experienced organization in dealing with ebola specifically and do incredibly good work in Africa and the world just generally. These folks are incredibly brave and their work in conflict zones saving civilians is mostly unsung and incredibly dangerous. https://donate.doctorswithoutborders.org/onetime.cfm?source=AZD140001D43&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=ppc&utm_term=brand_sitelink

* So what's up with me? I had a scheduling cock up which lead to me having to stay up all morning Monday. It also disrupted the meds schedule, and Tuesday I borked timing on the anti-nausea drugs. That level of nausea renders me entirely non-functional and the aftermath was rough, add to that me getting stranded and having to wait for rescue by AAA, the fact that I'm still having infection related lung trouble, and myriad things needing doing, I've been hard to reach. Apologies to anyone inconvenienced.

* An American freelance cameraman who had been living in Liberia for three years has contracted ebola. They are flying him home to an isolation ward, along with the NBC news team he had just started working with. It is unlikely the others have it, as they were following anti-infection protocols, and the cameraman turned himself in to a clinic pretty quickly. The news team will be well monitored and are taking the threat seriously. As with the Aid workers that were flown to Atlanta, I am not worried that this will cause an outbreak. Any outbreaks we have here will look like the cases in Texas or Nigeria, where it flew in on an airplane inside someone who didn't know they were infected.

The Nigerian outbreak has been completely contained, BTW. They did everything right, isolating the patient and his contacts quickly, checking children at schools and stepping up general screenings. One asshole deliberately hid and fled, infecting a doctor in a resort town, but they contained that quickly.

Unlike Dallas, where the hospital poo-pooed his ebola concerns and sent him home to infect potentially more people. his family are in quarantine, but Texas health officials are making no attempt to decontaminate the apartment where they are confined or providing them sensible help. There are five children in that home with the infected sheets and furniture.

The CDC is flying in a team of ten to sort out the Dallas situation, what with the locals doing a shit job of handling the outbreak and education for civilians.

Liberia plans to prosecute the Liberian man for traveling. It is possible he thought the woman he helped was miscarrying rather than dying of ebola.
