This is a fundamental question of human rights.

I have been haunted by this since I heard about it. I needed a little time to put my words together.

To me this is a fundamental case of justice deferred being justice denied. Men like D. L. Hughley say we haven't earned our civil rights because not enough of us have been beaten, not enough of us have died for us to deserve to be treated as full citizens. When I see someone argue this, I wonder how many of our dead bodies count as "enough?" Why don't a thousand plus years of mutilation and murder count? Crucially why don't the people suffering right now count. I suspect that no amount of death and suffering is "enough."

Right now, my people are suffering because they are denied their rights as citizens. Right now, people are losing their houses and apartments and a lot of their possessions when their partner dies because we are denied rights of inheritance and divorce. Right now people are being denied visitation rights to their children. Right now people are literally dieing alone in hospitals, because the hospital doesn't consider the people we've been with for decades as family. Right now, couples are separated because INS doesn't consider them married. Right now two men are dead who didn't have to be because neither of their countries considered them married.

People are literally dieing waiting for our rights to come, but people keep telling us to "be patient." Fuck patience. People are literally dieing while waiting to be declared fully human. Fuck waiting. We need our rights right now. Enough people have died waiting.

* Thanks to everyone who suggested books. I have a huge stack of requests in at my library, some available in system, others as purchase requests/ILL. I really needed some new fun stuff to read that I don't have to think so much about and I think it says a lot about how far we still have to go as far as fictional representation. It should be easy to make a list of books in various genes where the gay people are main characters and survive until the end. The fact that it still isn't here in the 21st century makes me terribly sad. The fact that I have a bunch of new authors to try makes me happy, so thank you all who helped.

* How can I tell I my local Supermarket is really close to a college? They had signs for their pi day promotion up all week.

* I have never seen even one episode of Veronica Mars, though I do love Rob Thomas' writing. I have no horse in this race, but I think the fundamental argument about why people fund Kickstarter projects and respecting choices other people make with their own money is an important one.
