* I'm not sure what to say about a Gentleman's Guide to Virtue and Vice. It's really well researched, which I always appreciate and has a Bi protagonist, and (I think) Gay and Ace characters in the main cast. It includes a biracial character in the main three and they don't lampshade the issues around race, which I like. I could actually pick out ways the narrative referenced real life 18th Century English people of African decent, within that character's story and I very much appreciate historically accurate representation. I also really liked the period appropriate handling of disability. It's a difficult juggling act and i think the author managed it well.
I just... really, really find the protagonist annoying as anything, though he does start to grow up in the course of the novel, and whole thing starts to become more fun than difficult to sit through round about Marseilles, if one hangs on long enough. One would think queer characters traveling about 18th century Europe on the Grand Tour with spies, intrigue, and shenanigans would be fun, but the protagonist is such an asshole that I was just lying there wanting to strangle the main character for the first third. A friend of mine described this as "Exactly the wrong kind of special talent."
I really did like the other two thirds and I enjoyed Felicity immensely. The novel plays with all sorts of historical and novelistic tropes and maintains a lovely balance between period and modern sensibilities. A (different) friend has pointed out that the choice of Monty for a viewpoint might have been a big part of the problem, and I have amused myself imagining how much more fun I would have had with the significantly more interesting Percy as the point of view character. I was also imagining the Felicity snark pov version, but then one missing out key bits of Percy/Monty's mess of a relationship. I honestly think a Percy centric version would have worked best. Still, I'm not sorry I read it in the end and i'd love a Felicity Po sequel since it sounds like adventures ahead for her.
