* I've discovered that the rerun channel is broadcasting Dick Cavett's of random eras on the regular. I grew up with these as Dick Cavett in whichever incarnation and on whichever channel he happened to be on that year was the one talk show that really interested my Mother. (I very much wish they would show the one with Robin Williams from his PBS Era, which we watched open mouthed as Robin William leapt about improving for the full half hour interview. No such luck yet). Some of these age better than others. There are plenty of celebrities I no longer remember or care about. Cavett is a little too focused on the beauty of certain women, such as Sofia Loren in ways that make me uncomfortable, though he is never anywhere near as gross as Lipton was to Brooke Shields on Actor's Studio. The episode with some gross sexist Frenchman harassing Sally Fields and some random lady from the audience was flat out unacceptable, but there are plenty of important and interesting interviews tucked in there, like the famous Katherine Hepburn one and the like.
Last night I watched the Ellsberg Pentagon Papers interview from 1971, and damn if it isn't intelligent and intensely relevant today, to the point I wish it were required watching for Congress Critters and anyone serving in the executive branch in any political capacity. The nuance with which they discuss his experiences in Vietnam and in government and the way he came to make the decision he did to leak the Pentagon Papers first to the Intelligence committee and the papers is just... something people ought to see. He had do decide which of several bad choices was the least terrible in the face of a Presidential Administration doing something harmful to the point of killing large numbers of people to no purpose, and the eloquence with which he explains how and why he got to that point is just something people faced with similar ethical choices ought to see.
I admit do fast forwarding over the bits of no interest and deleting whole episodes with no interest for me, but even this short taste has been worthwhile, if only for that.
