* The North Korean ICBM test failed in a little over a minute. It turns out we had a patriot missile set to shoot it down if it fly into Japanese air space. The real losers here are, as always the North Korean people, who will suffer because the food aid was contingent on their government not launching missiles at people. It is thought that the sheer crappiness of the missile won't change the resulting cancellation of food aid. To be clear, I am in favor of North Kora using their resources to feed their people instead of wasting them on crappy missiles I am am also in favour of them stopping to oppress their people in general and making sensible decisions like dismantling their weapons programs and allowing inspectors in exchange for humanitarian aid. I'm not holding my breath though.
* As I was getting ready to post this, word came in of government troops fighting in the capital of Guinea-Bissau in what is thought to be a military coup. As it was happening literally as I typed this, I can't tell you exactly what is going on. Also, I'm not much good at the bit of West Africa where the country is, and I know less about it thn Mali, where at least I had a basic general knowledge. If anyone is more up on this, I'd love to hear their take.
* Congratulations to Connecticut for voting to abolish the death penalty.
* Police responded to an elderly African American Vet Nam vet, Kenneth Chamberlain, accidentally triggering his medical alert device by sending riot police to shoot him. The police assure the family and the public that shooting the unarmed man with a heart condition down as completely legal and necessary. Presumably this is as opposed to sending an ambulance, which is the usual response to a heart patient setting of a medical alert devise.
* Rumor control: Hilary Rosen is not an adviser to the President despite FOX "news" promoting her to one because that would make her a better straw man. Ms. Rosen has also been a stay at home mother herself.
For the record, I think her wording was unfortunate, but her basic point that Anne Romney is not a good representative of all American women, being so rich that she's never had to make any tough choices like whether to let her kids go hungry or go to work. There is nothing wrong with staying at home to care for children if you can afford it and are so inclined regardless of gender, I just think that Mrs. Romney's circumstances are not anything close to typical. Also for the record, it's Mr. Romney who dragged his wife into the debate by repeatedly referencing her as part of his claim that him campaigning to ban birth control, abolish food stamps, etc. is popular with women and that the President's attempt to get women to access to health care is anti-woman as were his attempts to save the economy.
Ms. Rosen has apologized for her poor wording. Mr. Romney has not apologized for being in fabour of banning the pill, championing the rights of employers to deny women health care, his endorsement of the Ryan plan to abolish food stamps, sovial security, medicare, medicaid, etc. to pay for yet more tax cuts for the rich, all of which are significcantly worse for a majority of women than anything Ms. Rosen has said.
* Pundits are chewing over the probable cause documents in the Trayvon Martin case. I'm not going there, as these are very conservative documents and it's easy to read all sorts of things into this one. Now is time for patience. Patience is really hard in these situations, as I have reason to know, but this is the slow part, the motion and counter motion, delays and maneuver phase. I'm not saying orget about it; I'm just saying that this is how the process works and impatience isn't going to speed things up.
* Rachel Maddow does a lovely summing up of all the condescending ways the Right has tried to spin their misogynistic lawmaking into a caterpillar war: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#47036545
* Re: The latest Mel Gibson thing. I do not understand why any woman would date him. I do not understand why any studio would hire him to make a film. If the latest allegations are true (I have not heard or seen any of the evidence), I hope he is institutionalized for the safety of himself and those around him. Failing that, I hope he is arrested before he kills her.
* Kudoes to Quantis for going green with recycled fuel.
* If you haven't seen the footage of Mt. Etna erupting, I suggest you google it. The lava hitting water is something so beautiful and terrible all at once that there are no words for it.

May I add that teachers not only have a lot o student loans to pay off also, but you also have the high cost of required continuing education, other fees for maintaining a valid license, the maintaining of a professional wardrobe, all the office and classroom supplies that are out of pocket, all the co pays for doctor visits from infections picked up at work, all at a pay level equivalent with fast food workers.
* A side effect of moving is I have my air filter in my bedroom again. It is helping in a measurable way. I hope I remember how to change the filters when the time comes.
* I'm not a fan of chat windows outside of MUSHing. I will chat with people I know, but only if I recognize the user name. *waves at kireishojo* Generally, people I don't know are porn spammers, so for something like a decade, I block strangers. If you wanted to chat with me on say, yahoo, best to PM or email me a warning outside the messenger system or I'll automatically block you on the assumption you are trying to lure me into het porn I'm am completely uninterested in. I make an announcement like this every few years just in case I'm blocking someone I'd actually want to talk to.
* Is it wrong that I find Anderson Cooper giggling uncontrollably weirdly erotic?

* It amuses me that a google image search of "meerkat smerk" renders a first page of mostly meerkat images with three meerkat adjacent images, plus one picture of Kurt Hummel an two of Sebastian.
