Aug. 24th, 2012 08:36 pm* Approximately 200 people died in fighting in Syria today.
* The government of Haiti is doing nothing to help the folks in the tent city of Port au Prince. Better off citizens have taken shelter in secured structures, but those displaced by the earthquake are shot out of luck. Sounds familiar, doesn't it. The government plan is that somehow the "strong men" in the tent cities will help everyone else move to higher ground. Riiiight. Because human strength is so good against 35 mile an hour winds, massive flooding, contaminated drinking water, and mud slides, all of which are expected.
* There was a shooting at the Empire State building today. Two are dead including the shooter. Nine others were injured. It was during morning rush hour. The shooter was laid off from a business there and shot a former coworker with whom he had a history of harassment complaints. There was then a shoot out with police. Eight of the wounded are thought to have been accidentally shot by police.
* The actor who voiced Count Von Count on Sesame Street has died at 78. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/jerry-nelson-voice-count-von-count-sesame-street-dead-age-78-article-1.1144138
* In his honor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kqz-6LqX7M
* RNC rejects Akin, but not his beliefs about rape survivors and women's rights: Happy Birthday! :icecreampie:
* Mitt Romney was out stirring up Birther crap again today. He claims it was a joke, but no one is laughing. This is what it's like when a bully uns for president.
* I'm still working my way through my periodic rewatch of Eyes on the Prize. I just got to the part where people literally are beaten and killed for the right to vote and the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It's painful to know that Republicans are demanding it's repeal on the grounds that they need to deny black and brown people the right to vote en masse for nakedly partisan reasons. It feels like if voter suppression succeeds, those folks bled and died for nothing and it's all to do over again. Back then, of course, guaranteeing the right to vote to all citizens was a bipartisan ideal, with Republicans and Northern Democrats combining to over rule the nakedly racist Southern Democrats. Now, the Republican party proudly courts the racist vote and it's the democrats who are the only ones standing up for equality and Democracy. Too bad Democrats have so little spine just generally, or it wouldn't have gotten this far. The things happening in my country terrify me.
* I watched them do the trimming on the upper floors through my french windows (Or at least the climbing up and down ladders associated with it. The blue hasn't reached my front door yet, though they papered the second floor in prep. I just want it to be over so I can put my no missionary sign out again. We are already getting Mormons.
* My BPAL buddy is coming Sunday. I really need to clean. Things are rather chaotic what with the mess from the garden ad me not having enough maneuvering room in the living room.
* Wow, the Listener plays hard ball.
