* Extremely fishy shooting death of Chavis Carter while in police custody. The white police who arrested him but let his white friends go claim that he managed to hide a gun through two searches and shoot himself in the head while his hands were cuffed behind his back. Riiiiight,:

* On Ohio Republicans "fixing" voting by making it harder for Democrats to vote than for Republicans. The Republican arguement is that extended voting is too expensive so the fair way to do it is to cut down on extended voting in the more heavily populated areas where it's most needed, but not in Republuican dominated rural areas. * Yet another case of organized Republican voter fraud that wouldn't have been stopped by the voter suppression laws:

* Strong local trans ally and LGBTQ activist, Rev. Sue Stackhouse, has passed on due to cancer. I'm mostly posting it for folks who care about the Washington Gender Alliance, as I know most of you have no clue who this is: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/bellinghamherald/obituary.aspx?n=sue-anne-stackhouse&pid=158751616#fbLoggedOut

I know I'm on about this a lot, but I think this sort of thing needs more attention. It's incredibly easy for cis folk to never think about access to emergency health care being a cis folk only privilege. This sort of death still happens because despite the ideal that EMTs and hospitals treat everyone in need of emergency care, some paramedics and hospitals consider trans folk not really people and choose to let us bleed to death if we are in a car accident, are shot, or stabbed. This is generally considered acceptable and that makes me all stabby and furious. It's a human right and we are human and this shit needs to stop happening. This preventable death happened 17 years ago, but it's still happening.

* The car is fixed. I also hit the library and the fish store. I replaced the suckermouth that didn't make it, started an oto colony in the ten gallon (I need to go back and get one more. The ones I wanted were hiding), added blue fancy guppies (I need another girl), added more corys, and made yet another attempt to diversify the orange platys tank. I still need another bubbler and more tubing because I totally forgot. I am debating if I want red needle fish, girl betas, or tetras in the ten. This, some trans stuff, and today's Baba Ganoush is it as far as fun spending goes, at least until the 'Weenies drop. Anyway, most of the fish seemed happy in their new digs, though I worry about the suckermouth as they are delicate flowers and the oto is a little too active, making me worry about PH levels. I've been enjoying the corys so much this past week or so. I love watching them pick over the bridge hide for tidbits, and now there are enough to really school. They are such cute, loveable fish to watch snuffling about.

* Hector has decided anything that comes in a plastic bag of any kind must be a treat. He's not always wrong. Treats come in plastic pouches as does fish food and the algae wafers he craves. The problem is, that things like plums come in plastic bags too and howling and fighting me to steal them profits him naught. "What vile thing are you eating? Where are the treats?" Today, I forgot to take my backpack to the library, so they lent me some large AV bags to carry some of my things in. Imagine hector clawing over me to try to steal some books and DvDs. Imagine his confusion when nothing in their proved edible. Hector: too clever by half.

* Olympics Day 10-: The thing I find mesmerizing about Triathlon is that it's like watching evolution or Selkies coming ashore, that strange transition from sea creature to land mammal.
Diving: I love watching Diving, but in the back of my mind is Greg Louganis hitting the board, an element of risk, increased by knowing other divers have had similar injuries and worse. For the record, Greg is still smoking hot after all these years. Yes, I saw that poor Germany land flat on his back in the water. What's the opposite version of the belly flop. How embarrassing and heartbreaking to make it to the Olympics and then mess up that badly.
Athletics: Grenada got their first ever medal in one of the running events! I love firsts. The women's pole vaulting final was a nail biter, wasn't it?

* Promotion is hard. Let's eat donuts. http://seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com/460111.html

* I watched Gone Baby Gone which turns out to be shockingly good and with deep underlying ambiguity worth turning over in my head. It was done in the way I particularly like, with specificity of accent and location. (It turns out they not only used locals wherever possible, but they shot things in the particular neighborhoods they were supposed to be in according to the fiction and actually had exterior/interior continuity in a lot of cases). The acting was subtle and transparent, with some heavy hitters like Morgan freeman and Ed Harris along side less known character actors with high quality skills. I liked that the story took as long as it needed to take without forcing the action. I liked the diversity of local extras making it look like a real Est coast City and not Hollywood. I liked that they trusted the audience to intuit why certain things happened the way they did and what characters were thinking. I loved the ending and all the things it leaves bumping around in one's head. Looking at this, I think Ben Affleck clearly needs to do more directing. He clearly has a light and subtle touch as well as the skill to hire folks who really know what they are doing and letting them run. For serious, this was beautifully scouted, set designed, and shot.

One thing though. I was poking at the deleted scenes and saw a sex scene with Casey Affleck. I couldn't stop thinking how weird and awkward it must be for a brother to direct a brother in a sex scene or to be directed in a sex scene by one's brother. I'm glad they left it out of the final cut as it was unnecessary and extremely distracting to me. Yes, it was beautifully shot, but I wish I'd never seen it.

Thanks for the news about Sue Stackhouse. She helped me through some really dark times. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.

I never met her, but her reputation was huge and I had a great respect for her.
