* Turkey is deploying anti-aircraft guns, tanks, and soldiers at the border in response to Syria shooting down it's planes. Syrians are doing much the same.

* 65 civilians were murdered in Syria today. The government violence has spread to Beirut.

* The Chinese government has responded to two days of rioting in protest of police brutality in Shaxi by brutally putting down the riots and imposing curfews.

* Nestle's claiming once again that they are going to stop using child slaves to harvest cocoa beans. Given how many times they've claimed this in the past, I have no belief they are really going to stop using slaves. I continue to refuse to eat their product as I believe chocolate should not be made with the blood and tears of children.

* There are a bunch of emails that seem to show people at Penn State colluding to cover up the serial child rape and hide it from the authorities.

Y'all know how I feel about this.

I was a mandatory reporter. All teachers are. We were encouraged to involve administrators, but it was absolutely both my moral and legal duty to talk to CPS if I thought a child was in danger. Most of the kids who had terrible things happen to them that I dealt with were already in the system because someone reported earlier. I have made that scary phone call though, and had the long heartbreaking conversations that go with reporting. It's not fun for anybody involved, but it's the right thing to do. Yes, even if nothing gets done just then because shortages of social workers, money, and foster families means only the worst cases get looked into. If enough reports get in the file, there is hope of intervention. I never had to deal with anything as extreme as the Sandusky case, except as a matter of aftermath, of furious, damaged children trying to get their shit together years later. My disgust for the coaching staff and administrators at Penn state is impossible to put into words or express on paper.

* 36,000 people have now been evacuated in Colorado. There are 28 fires in seven states and spreading. They have found someone's body in a house and another person is missing.

This reminds me of my sister's job searches over the years. She mostly got the choice of being upfront about her disability and not getting hired or being fired a week or two in when someone inevitably outed her. (My sister's disability is less obvious. You can see the limp, but the rest is mostly invisible.)

In 1996 when I lived in Kentucky briefly there was ONE abortion clinic available to women, and very far away from the people it needed to service most with birth control and everything else: 500 miles away from Appalachia. Contrary to popular belief a lot of the people there want birth control and can't afford to be driving so far to get an abortion. It's totally sad that our rights as women to choose is being eroded from under our noses like that. I don't even know if that one clinic is still there in Kentucky!!

There must be one because last week it was only North Dakota without a clinic.
