Mar. 22nd, 2012 06:37 am* There appears to have been a military coup in Mali. I don't have much in the way of information or intelligent commentary.
* The Al Queada gunman in Toulouse has been shot by the police after wounding three officers.
I keep thinking of the Rabbi's wife. She is pregnant and lost her husband and two children in a few horrible moments. What words are there to encompass that sort of loss?
* They did not even take Zimmerman's gun for ballistics tests, let alone properly question him or arrest him. It's been pointed out that if he'd hit the kid with a car, he'd have been arrested on the spot, but stalking him and shooting a teenager didn't even warrant a breathalyzer or drug test, nor did they bring him in for questioning even though having murdered someone there was plenty probable cause. Tell me they would have treated a black man who shot an unarmed white teenager the same way. Go on.

* This update on a bunch of Republican anti-women laws has a bunch of important stuff in it: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#46816714
* Anderson cooper interviews the Florida Stand your ground co-sponsor: http://cnn.com/video/?/video/bestoftv/2012/03/22/ac-florida-stand-your-ground-law.cnn
* I dreamed I was called in by a school specifically to teach a class with a trans kid because there were some problems. (Not with the kid, but with the teachers). Talk about on the nose dreams. Still, I woke up missing teaching more than ever.

* Wait, Matt Bomer came out and I missed it?
* I know "colour blocking" is really "in" right now, but nine out of ten times, when I see it, it looks like it's only being done because it's "in," not because of the garment or shoe's design logic. I feel like it should be a tool to make the garment or outfit more flattering or attractive, not just for the sake of doing it. I suppose this makes me a fashion cretin. Wish I could show you a picture of what Elizabeth Banks was wearing on Craig Ferguson last night, as it's an example of what I think is a clever use of it, but I couldn't find an image.
* I saw the Dark Shadows trailer and that isn't Dark Shadows. the sound you are hearing is my heart breaking. I'll likely still see it eventually, but it's likely going to upset me like Braveheart and the Troy monstrosity. You have been warned. Look, DS was a big fucking deal in my house growing up. Yes, even as a kid I was aware of the terrible child acting and some terrible adult acting *cough* the shrink *cough*, the occasional Ed Woodlike mistakes they didn't bother to reshoot, the various ways it's problematic, etc., but they also had classically trained Johnathon Frid playing Barnabas, and characters like Woolley Loomis, Quentin, and Angelique. I do not understand why they are calling it Dark Shadows when it's not. When I heard they were making a movie, I was picturing a high quality modern redo of the things that were good about it, instead of a big mock of something I cared about passionately as a child.
For those of you who are too young to have any idea wtf I am talking about, Dark Shadows was the original Supernatural soap opera, sort of a Passions precursor. It started out as a regular soap opera, and someone had the clever idea of adding a vampire. Quickly, it became obvious that all people cared about were the supernatural elements and content got adjusted accordingly. My Father used to rush home from school to watch it. I caught it on PBS syndication in the late '70's and early '80's. I haven't seen all the years, but I did see most of them, and my Mom even took me to an inner city theater to see Mr. Frid in Arsenic and Old Lace. This is a beloved property for geeks of a certain age.
