I particularly love this bit "So if I say genderqueer it allows me to say, 'my gender is not normative, I am not heterosexual, these things are related' and also use a reclaiming word I am very fond of."

As they mentioned, I have huge respect for Viola Davis in particular as an actress, and have loved her in other things; that doesn't make the movie other than problematic. It's important to separate the script from the performances.
* I had that wake up repeatedly, wrestling the covers sort of sleep I get when I'm sick, but I'm not suffocating, which suggests that the black mold really was making my lungs significantly worse. I was together enough to make a smoothie (unsweetened, organic frozen strawberries and mango/peach silk. Mmmmm...protein and fruit!) and to do the sort of baking that takes two five minute segments of standing. I ought to make soup, but that's a half hour or more of prep.
* I may be getting as much fun out of the cat nip spray as the cats are. every three or four days, I quietly go and spray three or four things when they are distracted, sleeping, in another room, then sit back and watch the little noses twitch, and the beasties leak out of other rooms as they set about tracking down the sprayed objects. Oh, the joy of discovery! Oh! the happy wriggling! Oh. the batting about of toys!
* More BPAL stuff came in the mail today, and I've got a bunch of swaps in negotiation. Lots of stuff to play with when I can trust my nose and things arrive. Among today's toys is the atmosphere spray I am promised is lavender/vanilla dominant and I am hoping will improve sleep.
* I finished season 4 of the Wire. The death towards the end shook me more than any of the previous deaths in any of the other seasons. The thing that I kep thinking about all of season four is how much Carver and Prez grew on me over the seasons from such unpromising starts. I mean, I loved Kima and Lester right off in the very first episodes of season one, and the other character from one that I liked showed early promise. Carver and Prez, though, wow, talk about character evolution. Similarly, the kids of season 4... wow, that's some serious evolution too.

Date: 2012-02-27 12:49 pm (UTC)Omar rocks. I was also fond of Stringer, d'Angelo, and Bodie. That Stringer/Avon thing in season three really was Shakespearean. Oh and Bubbles. The season four kids broke my heart because they were so real. There are kids you teach in eighth, you just know they are headed nowhere good, and you fight hard to help them, but you can't save them all. The season 4 kids captured the ay that tears the heart.
Honestly though, the series is just made of cool little characters.
Oh man I love the guy... Fuck, what's his name, played Quearns in Oz, Caretti's right hand. The acting is so brilliant and the interactions between the two of them, just so right. All the bit parts, all the accents. I love the way it all weaves together and nothing is quite finished just in real life. I love the way that really is Baltimore, instead of some generic city or New york. I love they have extras with real Baltimore accents that are almost Philly or South Jersey, but not quite. I love that I recognized that exterior shot of the main government building in Annapolis, having passed it who knows how many times when I lived there. I love the specificity of place and the way it still managed to be nearly Universal. The way the politics above board and with the drg organizations effect each other and how they grind people up between them.
I also love how matter of fact the gay content is, the way it's all woven through without much fuss. I love that Kima's marriage got fucked up pretty much exactly the way McNulty's was. I love that we only know Rawls is gay because he's having a drink in the bar where the dude is looking for Omar. I love that Omar is the biggest bad ass in the show.
I didn't think I'd take to it, looking at the first few episodes of the first season, as it didn't seem like my thing, but then I saw what they were trying to do and Dayumn! I can't think of anything this complex and intricate in all sorts of ways that play to my interests.
I missed all this stuff back when it was new, as I had little or no access to cable for years, so I'm working my way through now.
