Feb. 25th, 2012 07:19 am* Looks like Hilary Clinton and the President were out giving statements intended to pressure the Syria regime. This is a necessary first step before pushing harder. It isn't going to do much of anything for the folks in Homs, but it signals we are starting diplomatic maneuvers, most of which will likely not be obvious or even visible. Diplomacy done right is generally a tip of the iceberg thing, with only very specific stuff visible. It's too early to be either hopeful or disappointed yet. This is more in the way of a statement that we are starting maneuvers than the real maneuvers. Fingers crossed. This one is going to be difficult and I am yet again incredibly grateful both that it isn't my job and that competent people like President Obama and secretary Clinton are making these decisions and not the Shrub or any of the clowns currently in the republican field. I know most US citizens don't give a fuck about this stuff, but Foreign Policy is vital and gets more so every day.
* I wish I knew more about Qatar, beyond the very basics, as they may be about to become important on the world stage outside of their economic importance.
* I think I forgot to mention that Greece is still afloat. I know it doesn't get much coverage in US news, but trust me, if the EU collapses, they will likely take most of the rest of us down into an even worse place than Republican deregulation of financial markets and Bush era tax policies did. I do not have a long term answer for Greece (or Italy. Or France. Or... you get the idea). I'm not convinced any one does, but let's all hope I'm wrong there and that whoever has good answers is getting heard in the right places.
* Re: Idiots burning Korans in Afghanistan. Um... Duh. It doesn't matter whether of not there were inflammatory things hidden in them, it doesn't take much thought at all to realize that burning Korans was going to infuriate the locals to the point of rioting. Optics, people, optics. If they lacked the imagination and empathy to figure out why this was going to lead to violence, you'd think someone would try turning the Senario around. what if the Saudi were occupying Alabama and started burning New testaments? Think that would go over well? No? So don't fucking do it.
* Dharun Ravi's trial for secretly taping Tyler Clementi with his boyfriend in order to out him and publicly humiliate him on the Internet and in front of fellow students.
* It occurs to me I'd bought that large bag of satsumas I found on sale and was eating them like candy for three days in a row. I wonder if it was staving off the pathogen. It's weird, I feel like I'm on morphine, but I haven't even taken a Tylanol-3. This is not a good thing. Long time readers will now how much I hate the feel of narcotics. The serious ones like morphine and demerol drive me up the wall. I hate the whole time stretchy thing and the inability to properly concentrate, coupled with the restlessness that characterizes my response to downers in general. (I luckily didn't inherit the familial allergy that involves tripping balls, paranoia, aggression to the point of violence and extreme agitation. This is a terrible combination, trust me. My milder atypical reaction means give me a Vicodin and I clean the house. Give me two Vicodin, oxy, morphine, etc.. and I'm too dizzy to clean, but too agitated to much want to sit still, and can't focus my eyes well enough to read. No wonder heroin is baffling to me.) This is like surgical grade pain meds only without any abatement in pain. Ick.
Man, I wish I had another bag of satsumas. Also, I wish I had salad greens. Now would be a really good time for fresh fruit and vegetables. Sigh. Hell, I'd settle for energy to turn fixings into a vegan smoothie.
I've pretty much tossed out my non-allergen related medical food restrictions the last week, as I've been struggling with finding stuff that I can get don and keep there. Likely another sign I was fighting off a pathogen. I'll go back to rationing when I'm not trying to sort out food in the windows during which I can eat.
* The cats requested that I stop playing Bessie Smith. Apparently, she's hitting something alarming in their hind brains, poor things.
* Me: "Why ae half my Sunday shows canc... oh! Right! Oscars! You'd think I'd been into the Oscars, given my interests, but I'm generally not. I'll watch if there's something important to me going on (John Stewart or Hugh Jackman hosting. Milk up for Oscars.) I have a suspicion the horrible Help movie will be taking a bunch of prizes and the thought makes me queasy.

* Proactive must be a pretty powerful enchantment to remove "dark marks" from Death eaters. Snerk. Yes, I know that's not what they mean, but I totally keep picturing Severua Snape trying to simultaneously solve the acne and the political problem alone in his potion lab late at night and coming up with Proactiv.
* It looks like Rick "frothy residue" Santorum has been out deliberately telling incredibly offensive lies including statistics he made up whole cloth about the Netherlands. I wish a reporter would ask him whether the goals of these deliberate insults is to alienate the European community on purpose in order to further isolate us diplomatically or merely to embarrass us on an international scale Bush style. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#46520567
* I couldn't find a clip with only Gov. O'Malley of Maryland sounding off on Republican over reach while Virginia Gov. Bob "forced Vaginal Probe" McDonell squirmed, so I'm having to give you the much longer Maddow segment. Until I saw the man about to sign Maryland equality into law sitting next to the man who's been advocating medical rape of women and the abolishing of birth control, it didn't occur to me 1. What a juxtaposition that is. 2. that however much I hated Annaoplis, I still consider Maryland the home team when they are up against Virginia politically. Who knew? Anyway, I love it when a democrat fights back. you go, Gov. O'Malley, you go!: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#46520741
