gwydion* Yes, I heard Santorum's millionaire saying contraception is cheap because "back in my day gals put aspirin between their knees." Yes, I get that he thinks it a joke; I don't think he gets why women aren't finding Santorum's plans to drag us back to those days funny.
* Why am I calling Foster Freeze Santorum's millionaire? Because most of the money to keep santorum in the race comes from him, just as Adelson is almost single handedly keeping Gingrich afloat. Welcome to the post-Citizens United funding world, where a single billionaire can purchase a candidacy out right for someone ze thinks will then serve zim if ze gets in office.
* As expected, Chris Christie vetoed Marriage Equality in New Jersey. He is arguing that the Civil Rights movement in the South would have gone soooo much better if the rights of African Americans were put up to vote. I can only imagine the rest of the argument goes like this: After all, as African Americans were almost universally barred from voting, so the whites could have simply voted down their civil rights and that would have been so much less violent and much better, right? Therefore, we should put the basic rights of LGBT folk up to vote so we can prevent them having them.
* They are trying to make a law to arrest teachers if they mention homosexuality below 9th grade. The bill's sponsor claims that "regular people" don't get AIDS, meaning people who are not gay, from Africa, addicts, etc.. He is erroneously claiming that you can't get AIDs from hetero sex. This is me giving him some serious side eye. Can he here himself talk?
* They have arrested a suicide bomber in DC. Remember how I keep saying that counter terrorism is best done buy law enforcement? Yeah.
* I opted for rest and puttering about doing housework instead of errands. I think it was a good choice from a physical perspective. The dodgy kitchen faucet broke as I did dishes. As annoying as that is right now, the landlord's likely to upgrade rather than downgrade during fixes of this type. So I can spend the weekend tidying and call it in for Monday. I noticed an official notice on my neighbor's door and checked it, mostly as they are good quiet neighbors and I'd be bummed if they were being evicted. It turned out to be a notice of entry as they needed to check their plumbing to see if they had the same problem we did. Logical as the fixtures are all the same age, and if ours were rusting out, so might everyone else's. It occurs to me that this may be why it was quieter this week. There are a lot of buildings to check for plumbing issues. Maybe they put off the rest of the carpentry in favour of making sure the plumbing isn't rotting floors and carpets. It is so weird to have a landlord that actually fixes things proactively instead of having to be threatened with lawsuits over cheap repairs that would protect the building long term. It's a good weird, but it takes getting used to.
* LM's been branching out now she has primary territory in a common area, and things are generally more socially normal, as specially as the warmer weather means Mache is more herself.
* I'm trying to think of recent post-apocalyptic survivors with disabilities. I'm coming up with the kick ass wheel chair guy and the blind swordsman in World War Z (I can't remember any names from the book after this many years, but his story stuck in my head), the folks with KA in Feed, and some people in the Walking Dead Comics who developed disabilities as events moved along. Can anyone think of others? How about LGBTQ folks in recent post-Apocolyptic stuff? All I'm coming up with off the top of my head is Walking Dead Comics with one bi woman and a gay male couple. This can't be it, can it? Can anyone think of any trans survivors at all?
* Did Marchesa switch from making dresses with lots of ruffles and tulle to lingerie while I wasn't paying attention? * It's looking like Marc Jacobs is doing a sort of pear shaped bustle thing, I'm sure I remember from Alexander McQueen a little while ago. I hope this means they will start designing clothes for actual pear shaped women, because it seems to me that there is a serious lack of accommodation for pear shaped figures, which I have often thought was a terrible shame. I once saw two wives of men from two different consulates on a bus in DC. They were sitting across from me and I picked up enough conversation to gather a basic idea of their friendship and circumstances, though not countries of origin. Anyway, they were both beautiful, large, pear shaped woman, and were dressed in lovely outfits that showed off and enhanced their beauty. I have often wished since, that Western designers would design clothes like that, but all the plus sized stuff is for apple shapes, and is often deliberately, aggressively ugly, as if the people deciding it had never thought that a plus sized woman (whatever her shape) might be beautiful or want to dress well. Tat sucks, just as it sucks that so much of the non-plused sized clothes is designed for only one body type, and people with different ratios must either tailor everything, or put up with nothing quite fitting properly.
* Looks like oxeblood, navy, orange, and gold (and metallics in general) are in for next Fall, though I see there's still a lot of that boring beige/sand/off white crap still out there. Please bring back the jewel tones, fashion industry, please!
