* Nelson Mandela is in the hospital for something abdominal. Let's hope he's okay.

* This short group obit for the dead journalists in Syria made me tear up despite being so matter of fact: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/melissa-harris-perry/46523712/#46523712

I particularly love this bit "So if I say genderqueer it allows me to say, 'my gender is not normative, I am not heterosexual, these things are related' and also use a reclaiming word I am very fond of."

As they mentioned, I have huge respect for Viola Davis in particular as an actress, and have loved her in other things; that doesn't make the movie other than problematic. It's important to separate the script from the performances.

* I had that wake up repeatedly, wrestling the covers sort of sleep I get when I'm sick, but I'm not suffocating, which suggests that the black mold really was making my lungs significantly worse. I was together enough to make a smoothie (unsweetened, organic frozen strawberries and mango/peach silk. Mmmmm...protein and fruit!) and to do the sort of baking that takes two five minute segments of standing. I ought to make soup, but that's a half hour or more of prep.

* I may be getting as much fun out of the cat nip spray as the cats are. every three or four days, I quietly go and spray three or four things when they are distracted, sleeping, in another room, then sit back and watch the little noses twitch, and the beasties leak out of other rooms as they set about tracking down the sprayed objects. Oh, the joy of discovery! Oh! the happy wriggling! Oh. the batting about of toys!

* More BPAL stuff came in the mail today, and I've got a bunch of swaps in negotiation. Lots of stuff to play with when I can trust my nose and things arrive. Among today's toys is the atmosphere spray I am promised is lavender/vanilla dominant and I am hoping will improve sleep.

* I finished season 4 of the Wire. The death towards the end shook me more than any of the previous deaths in any of the other seasons. The thing that I kep thinking about all of season four is how much Carver and Prez grew on me over the seasons from such unpromising starts. I mean, I loved Kima and Lester right off in the very first episodes of season one, and the other character from one that I liked showed early promise. Carver and Prez, though, wow, talk about character evolution. Similarly, the kids of season 4... wow, that's some serious evolution too.
