* Anthony Weiner's seat just fell to a Republican.

* In Pennsylvania, the Republicans are planning to change the law so instead of the electoral votes going with the popular vote, they are changing the weighting to make suburban votes count more than urban votes, in the hopes of denying Obama electoral votes next year. After all, in Republican minds, white votes should be worth more than brown and black ones, and way more POc live in cities than suburbs in Pennsylvania. This is part of the republican national strategy to disenfranchise as many POc as possible.

How far the party of Lincoln has fallen. I suspect poor Thaddeus Stevens is spinning in his grave.

* Many of you have likely never heard of Thaddeus Stevens. He is the Pennsylvania politician of whom I am most proud. He was the leader of the most radical Republicans in the house during Reconstruction. He, along with Charles Sumner in the Senate, worked tirelessly to try to redress the wrongs our country had done to African Americans, fighting hard for equal rights for people in this country regardless of the colour of their skin. When he died, he requested to be buried in a black cemetery at a time when cemeteries were segregated even in the North, because he believed people should be equal in death as well as in life and that segregation was fundamentally wrong.

With him died Radical Reconstruction, and the only concerted effort to make the wrongs done to African Americans right until the civil Rights Era of the 1960's. After him, Congress let go the idea of equality and let the south build Jim Crow and all the horrors and humiliations that went hand in hand. After him, the federal Government stopped fighting KKK terrorism. Many have speculated that if he'd lived for one more term, things in this country would have been radically different and so much better. Most of a century of of atrocities and disenfranchisement might have been avoided.

* Remember that white supremacist attempted bombing at the MLK parade in Spokane? He pleaded guilty. Y'all know I'm no fan of the FBI, but they did a good job on this one.

* I have an apartment to look at tomorrow.
