Apr. 6th, 2011 03:05 am* The Republicans announced today that they categorically refuse to compromise in anyway on their plan top punish children, the poor, the middle class, and seniors to pay for the bonus tax cuts for the richest 2% while also stripping basic reproductive rights from women and enforcement of environmental protection agency. After all, things like subsidies for oil companies are way more important to their corporate masters than educating children or letting people go to college. The Democrats having caved on nearly everything, they are now demanding the abolishment of medicare in favor of yet another give away to the Insurance company as a minimum condition for negotiating. After all, if it's cheap, efficient, and working well, smash it to pieces. Too bad if it kills a lot of elderly and disabled people! Those aren't corporations so the "general welfare" doesn't apply to them! Why make things better when you can make them worse?
This isn't a negotiation; it's a hostage situation.
If only the Democrats had spines. I have a nasty suspicion they will give in even though the damage the Republicans are trying to do to the American people is so far reaching as to be nigh unfathomable.
* Seriously, can we clone Wiener and DeFazio?
* Why is it that not knowing if the top two percent would get a bonus tax cut to add to their savings accounts was destabilizing uncertainty even though their econimic impact on the GNP is negligible, while making every federal Employee, Social Security recipient, person on Unemployment, and government contractor go for months not knowing if their check will come is not deemed destabilizing even though their objective economic impact is huge? It seems backward if you look at the actual economic figures. Just saying. It's also cruel as anything to tell folks the money they need for rent, mortgage, car payments, food, etc. may or may not come, but they should be happy as this sacrifice is padding the savings of the extremely wealthy.
* Re the provision in HR. 1 intended to illegally supersede Article 1, Section 7 of the Constitution without going through the Amendment process, Republicans, if Rep. Louis Gommert is your voice of reason, you have gone way way to far.
* It looks like I won't be seeing the neurosurgeon until early May. It's just as well; I'll have time to recover from hand surgery.
* I'm enjoying Dead to Me. I have given Conner Detective Lennie Briscoe, from Law and Order's voice. I have given the main character, a younger, slightly softer Joe Pantoliano type voice. This lies somewhere between Ghostbusters, MIB, and a hard boiled police detective novel from the middle of the last century, while still feeling very modern. It is the rare novel in it's genre with a male lead, like Dresden Files or Felix Castor, and is particularly rare in that the main characters are over worked members of a government bureaucracy rather than freelance. I'm enjoying it thouroughly so far. I'll let you know how I feel when it's finished.

* The Feds have told the Maine governor that they want the mural displayed or the $60,000 federal grant to paint it returned. That's right, the Governor's vendetta against labor that involved the petty nastiness of removing a mural depicting the history of labor in the Us from the Labor department on the grounds it isn't anti-labor is now going to cost Maine money.
How is this creating jobs for the citizens of Maine and cutting their budget deficit again? It seems to be doing exactly the opposite of what the governor claims are his priorities.
* The government continues to slaughter peaceful protesters in Yemen.
* I'm glad I figured this stuff out so young. Enough of my friends burned out not getting it: http://lettersfromtitan.com/2011/04/05/having-a-public-life-when-youre-no-one-in-particular/
* I am uncomfortable with an underage girl winning fug madness.
* Rachel Meddow on the Republican attacks on the post office, including footage of Republicans being dicks to the Post Master General because he dares to treat employees decently: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/ns/msnbc_tv-rachel_maddow_show/#42443813
