gwydion: Vlad and Niran kissing (Kiss)
[personal profile] gwydion
* I forgot to mention that the Syrian government tried to back it's claims that it's large scale torture and murder of unarmed civilians, including children, is somehow justified by presenting news footage from four or so years ago shot in Lebanon to prove that armed gangs in terrorist thugs are who are not members of the Syrian government are somehow responsible for the violence. There was no explanation for how Lebanese file footage proves anything at all about current events in Lebanon, or why it should outweigh the rooms full of footage actually shot in Syria in the last year, but the Syrian government claims it does.

* Today, the cats and I had lots of cuddling. At one point Hector surprised the Butt, by throwing an arm around him and spooning him. The Butt's wanting this sort of close cuddling by the Senior Beasties since he joined the clowder, and he certainly wasn't objecting, but his expression suggested that he thought Hector had been brain swapped by aliens. Yesterday, I mostly sorted out my room. Today, I also made more headway in the kitchen and did a whole lot of minute sorting in the office. The result is my work station is even more cluttered, but there is more room for the next stage of unpacking.

I may have spoken too soon on the health thing. The fever was worse today, and my level of function dropped with it. Gah!

* After... a year? More? Of the black and white Hartnell and Troughtons, today was the first Pertwee. I was genuinely startled by it being in colour, despite have grown up with Pertwee and Baker on TV simultaneously, and eventually Davidson joining them as well. (They all ran at different times. We had three Public Television Stations on or UHF dial, the advantage of being able to tune in New Jersey and Delaware Stations from Philly, thanks to a fortunate geography). It amuses me that I got even some weak echo of the greater shock the original audience much have felt. Such things are rare. I was so startled, I didn't actually take in that much of that first episode. Admittedly, I'd seen it, I don't know how many times during the endless syndication of my childhood, but I haven't seen any of the Pertwees in more than half my lifetime.

* During the course of this move, I've been watching The Duchess of Duke Street, three episodes at the time. Rather, I should say rewatching. For the first three episodes, I have a strong memory of watching it in my parents room, as well as the contents, and lesser, separate memories of later episodes. When I first saw it, the sex and more subtle coercion mostly went over my head, but having watched the neighbors, I knew spousal violence when I saw it, even if I didn't understand exactly what he was trying to do. It amazes me, by parents let me watch it, but watch it together we did. Watching it now, it is no surprise at all to me that my parents loved the main character, her strength of will, independence, intelligence, and strength pitted against Edwardian class prejudice and sexism... She could have been any of the women of my mother's family, really, stomping her way through history, dragging the men and the children that clung to her skirts through any number of crisis and alarms. I love the complexity of text and subtext, I love the acting, but most of all I love Louisa Trotter and her stubbornly working class accent insisting on living her way on her own terms, an ancestress of the heart rather than blood, if that makes sense.

* neo_prodigy found. I see there is yet another celebrity who thinks that freedom of speech means depriving others of their right to disagree with that speech, and a complete freedom from consequences of that speech, like people deciding you are probably a bigot: http://uryel.tumblr.com/post/13345814558/probably-not-the-sharpest-tool-in-the-shed-huh

It's not Ally Cookie Day, damnit. It's a day to remember our dead and to remember those who are still fighting for equality. Am I grateful there are allies? Yes. Do I think for just once, maybe, something should be all about us and our fallen? Hell to the yes.
