Jun. 4th, 2011 03:05 am* Jack Kevorkian is dead.
* They've indicted John Edwards on misuse of campaign funds in the cover up of his affair.
* Yemen's reached a level of violence that really, I'm having a hard time describing. The Protesters attacked the presidential compound today. However things end up in Yemen in the short term, I am not expecting a long term positive outcome.
* So lets talk about disaster relief for a minute. Every year in a country the size of the US with the sort of geography we have, there are going to be floods, tornadoes and hurricanes. In some years, there are also earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. The disasters vary in intensity and destructiveness depending on a variety of factors. The Republicans are proposing that instead of having an agency of people trained in disaster relief always at ready, and funds allocated for immediate help in case of a disaster, with a chance of voting more, if the disasters are particularly bad like the Tornado that hit Birmingham or Hurricane Katrina, instead, we should pretend there are not disasters every year. If we pretend that, we don't need to make any effort to prepare. We should get rid of early warning systems that track things like hurricanes, volcanoes, tsunamis, etc.. We should get rid of FEMA and generally stop paying people to be ready to step up during yearly disasters, and we should not allocate any funds for immediate response to disasters. Instead, we should wait for disasters to happen, making them worse than they have to be because of lack of early warning systems, local disaster drills and PSAs, disaster and evacuations plans, and centralized organization for rapid response. Then we should wait for congress to take money out of the non-military, non-subsidy budget to pay a pittance for disaster relief at the expense of other needy people. I mean,m look how well this worked for Haiti. This will of course cause widespread misery, a greater loss of life, be way more expensive, and be vastly less efficient, but that's a small price to pay for say, taking health care away from the needy or the worthy cause of defunding schools.
Don't worry, Eric Cantor's plan will mostly only harm the poor and middle class. Those are people, not major corporations, so it's not like it counts as real damage.
* I see the 4th of July fireworks have started. Sigh. I wish they would just confine them to a week before and after instead of a month before and a few months after. At least they aren't shooting at buildings this time.

* Why do they have a cockney doing the voice over for the highlands Games commercial?
* I got a decadent amount of sleep (Dream: Science museum). I did swim, though only minimum laps. i spent all afternoon getting stuff done, and only managed about half of what needed doing. I did not get time to walk the cats, despite the perfect weather, poor beasts.
