Apr. 30th, 2011 12:29 am* The aweful aunt made it through the tornadoes with the power out only for twenty four hours and no property damage. My Icky cousin, his wife, and their sprogs here still in the hospital after the birth of the youngest, and crouched in the hospital hall during the worst of it. I'm glad the children are fine.
The house they sold in the divorce is damaged, but not gone. This is the house where we stayed on visits when I was a child and teen. Two blocks from the house, there is only debris. The house her vile parents lived in isn't there anymore. It resides in my memory entirely as a room containing dollhouses we couldn't touch. It was sold when they went into the nursing home.
* The news tallies deaths. Obama stands in the wreckage and promises FEMA will help and the money's on it's way. What are the Republicans doing? This year's budget drastically cut disaster preparedness and FEMA funds in general. Bigger cuts are promised, as Billionaires need more mansions and that's way more important than saving lives or helping people in the wake of disasters like Katrina or this horrible infestation or hurricanes, or the flooding in the Midwest, or the next big earthquake or flood out here, or the next blizzard. After all, what are the chances of a natural disaster seriously harming CEOs or major corporations?
* I finished the first Lord of the White Hell Book. They aren't kidding about it being a book separated into parts. The first one ends rather abruptly. normally this would piss me off, but I procured the second half today and the damned thing is so good, I can't work up much irritation.
I read an Octavia Butler and most of a Sharpe in the interim.
* RM found, Lara Logan is heroically speaking up about her sexual assault and what female journalists face around the world (trigger warning, obviously): http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/29/business/media/29logan.html?_r=1
* It's time to debunk that Catherine the Great crap again. No, she did not have sex with a horse, let alone die in the process. She slept with five or six men total in the course of a long life. If she was a man who slept with five or six women, we would not be having this discussion. If you are telling jokes about Catherine the great and horses, you are participating in sex negative shaming and misogyny. Yes, she's dead, but when you go around equating a woman sleeping with a handful of men with bestiality, you are part of a larger societal problem.
* It was the best thing, what Castiel did to Lenore. Today, I realized I'm mostly watching for him, what with the shark retreating in the rear view mirror. I am way more interested in what he's been up to and i keep wanting to smack the boys upside the head for not paying attention to the obvious trouble and distress he's under, much as they ignored Bobby until he yelled at him that time. I guessed the small plot big plot twist. Of course. And now Crowley's back and Up to something with Castiel, which I hadn't guessed. I have a theory about that, but I'm not ready to put it to words.
