Apr. 13th, 2011 02:27 am* I got nearly everything done that needed doing today. Now to remember to not eat after midnight. It's like Gremlins!
* Glen Beck wants you to know that only hookers use Planned Parenthood. Why tell the truth when lying serves you better. I'm willing to bet nearly all of the U. S. women reading this blog have used Planned Parenthood and many of the men have used them. Extra points for yet more demonizing of sex workers, because our culture doesn't do that enough, right?
* Walgreens has issued an official statement debunking Republican claims that they are performing public breast exams and Pap smears presumably for the anatomical edification of gynophilic adults and curious children.
Are Republicans so out of touch with reality that they believe the things they are saying?
* Congress woman Bachman is stumping against women's health using a made up quote and imaginary figures. I repeat, if their arguments are strong and their cause so just, why are they lying?
* 2/3rds of Ryan's budget plan will come from targeted cuts to things middle and low income people need. It hardly touches the deficit, but don't worry, it contains yet another economy slowing tax cut for just the rich! After all, who cares if Grandma starves, loses her health care, and ends up homeless if the koch brothers can buy an island with money they aren't pating in taxes.
* Something I said in an online discussion of the Aenead:
I love the rhythmic effects. It's subtle and lovely and doesn't translate at all. One of my favorite Latin teachers used to liken Aeneas to one of those wind up toys. She did this routine with a wind up chickie that would hit the wall. She'd be the goddess and tell stoooooopid Aeneus he was going the wrong way. The chickie would keep walking in place against the wall. She'd do a whiny Aeneus voice complaining. The Goddess would then rescue stooooopid, stubborn Aeneus by picking him up and pointing him in a new direction.
She was the best actual teacher in the U of O classics department, so they denied her tenure for having ovaries and a movement disorder. There was a law suit. She hit the Aeneus nail on the head, she did. She also claimed that Aeneaus was the first modern character in Western literature. After all, we first see him in the middle of a storm practically wetting himself in terror and the Aenead can be seen as a complex and elaborate, yet subtle mock of both the hero tradition and Augustus' pretensions. After all, he wrote the poem under protest. I admit, I'm an Iliad fan when it comes to epic poetry and when it comes to Roman literature I lean more towards Catullus and Petronius, but I do have a real fondness for the Aenead, and the masterful use of poetic effects. It's so beautiful read out loud. It's so much easier to stomach Aeneus himself if you give yourself permission to mock him.
It was at this point Karjack said, she's "not gonna lie she reads Aeneus and it sounds like anus in her head. You'd have emotional problems too if your name meant butthole. But when people call him by name you can assume they're saying, "Hey, asshole.""
I answered, "Well, Aeneus was rather a butthole."
Karjack added, "QED."

* Yes, I know about the interesting find in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, people writing press coverage don't seem to understand that gay men are men and trans women are women, so the coverage is pretty offensive and I refuse to link to it. The short version is, they found an early burial of a male skeleton buried in the female position without male grave goods. On a previous occasion, they found a female skeleton buried in male position with male warrior grave goods belonging to the same culture. It's a very small sample size, but it may suggest that the culture in question allowed individuals to live and die as their gender regardless of birth sex. It's all very tentative, being based on two burials from a pre-literate culture.

* Rachel Maddow did a lovely thing about the Anniversary of Fort sumpter and the nullification/Secessionist things going on with tea Party republicans. It's a nice round up of Republican attempts to roll things back to the Confederacy. For the record, my Mom's response to rising Texan and Alaskan Successionism: Let them go. We don't need them.

Date: 2011-04-13 10:40 am (UTC)And yeah, I have had moments of trying to explain the poetry in the Aenead to people and how a lot of it relies on things you just can't do in English because our language doesn't work that way even in poetry. Like chiasmus and golden lines. And then there are the subtle digs that you /can/ explain, but it takes a while because you really need the historical and cultural background to understand why that particular image or phrase was really a dig at or commentary on Augustus and his policies.
And it does just read beautifully.
