* Today I went to friends' house for pizza, cider, stole, and sitting by the fire. They got a ton of old lights from work, and gave me two bags of them, icluding c9 strings, which are extra exciting as the electrical wiring went out on my 20+ year old strings blew this year. I figure sorting out lighting design with them will be a fun next year project. I left early because of the ice and barely made it out. My Sister got me a lovely TARDIS topper I plan to put in Halloween village next year, and a beautiful TARDIS ornament. These are super fragile, so I'm putting it on the altar, as otherwise a cat will destroy it. These plus the Mozart balls are the best gifts she's gotten me in forever.

* The last few years an annoying amount of stores switched for the inclusive "Happy holidays" that also includes things like New Years and any number of other things people might be celebrating, even though this is the polite thing people had been saying for at least half a century (my mom certainly remembered it from her childhood and had immediate post WWII cards to prove it), because Christians like to pretend they are being persecuted even though they are the dominant religion in this country and a lot of them demand that their bigotry needs to be law so they can take basic human rights for the rest us. I took to responding to this with "Happy Hanukah" even though I'm not Jewish, because fuck that forcing me to participate against my conscience in a commercial context thing and I have a deep and abiding love for Reformed Judaism even though I ultimately decided not to convert. For private people in a non-business context, I'd reply with Merry Gothmas, on the grounds that if they wish me their holiday, I'll wish them mine back damnit. (Gothmas = the season from September to Jan. 5th). For Seasons Greetings or Happy holidays, i mirror it back.
I was all braced for yet another round of annoying evangelism in commercial contexts, but it didn't happen to me this year. Not once in a month and a half. I got a handful in private citizen contexts, but zero cashiers, medical personnel, etc. trying to force me to pay lip service to their religion or that of their employers (which is worse, because they are black mailing people with money they need for food and rent into mouthing religious phrases against their conscience, which is eeeeew).
I think it's the election. I think my region looked at the ugly ass bullshit over an imaginary "War on Christmas" FOX "News" invented to stir up outrage against people behaving decently the way they had for pretty much forever to stoke ratings and how that tactic ended in the Neo-NAZIs taking the white house and decided, "Fuck it, we're not coddling them anymore at the expense of everyone else." It's a tiny, minor form of resistance, but let us hope it's a sign of bigger things to come.
