* When I saw the 1820′s style of Ballet, I could see exactly how early modern dances like the Galliard evolved through Louis XIV’s court into the Ballet I was learning in the '70's and '80's, but I didn’t think of the influence fencing might have, but of course it did. I swear these videos are mesmerizing.

* The suicide prevention commercials are powerful and important, but one of them is incredibly triggery and I never notice it until it is too late. The other two I've spotted so far are fine, but that one? Fuck! Fuckfuckfuck. Thrice in one night.
* It is still snowy outside. It's fine by day, but unsafe at night so I can't go out lest I break a leg. This whole year has had normal weather instead of the horrible new normal climate change weather we've had since '08 or so. As much as I hate being confined, it is comforting that we are still capable of having Winter here, though I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.
* So what's with all the Ballet stuff all of a sudden? After all, I rather lost interest in ballet about the time I realized I'd never do any kind of dancing or martial arts again. I watch ballet or movies about ballet now and then in a bittersweet way, but I've lost most of the vocabulary from disuse. It was a thing I was good at and loved intensely the way I loved the martial arts practice that ended up replacing it.
But I've been chatting with a friend who loves it, and the conversations have reminded me why I loved it so. I can't remember the name of my favorite spin, but I can spot it when I see it.
I was a poor kid who loved to dance, but was realistic enough to know I didn't have the intensity to do it for a living. Professional ballet was a rare and treasured thing I would hunt for in the TV listings. The time I got to see it for real on stage as a kid blew me away, but mostly, the dancing I saw was the dancing I or people I knew were doing. I still remember the first time I saw Rite of Spring, La Spectre de la Rose, and the Faun, broadcast on A&E when it was brand new and I would watch them over and over (A&E had very little programing the first year or two, and they'd show the same plays and ballets a lot), fascinated. My ballet education is hit and miss. What I've seen is pretty random, and often fragmentary. I am not an educated viewer, and what I do know is tied up in my memories of first seeing a thing, or in the sensation of doing individual sequences of movements, in the feel of practicing a thing over and over, the look of our old practice floor, in the books I read and the homework I did waiting until the floor was clear to stretch.
Talking ballet like this reminded me of my friends I used to dance with. (I was not friends with a lot of the corps girls because they were dilettantes and many of them were assholes). I was part of a group of six or seven who were serious as anything about it. We were the work horses who would dance anything we were offered, who never complained, and so we got most of the solos, the pas de deux, the featured bits. It broke my heart when we moved and there was no where good to dance.
* I had forgotten how good and perfect House of Flying daggers was until I watched it again the other day.
