* Tonight was the second day of protests in Charlotte North Carolina against the police murder of Keith Lamont Scott. Police are insisting that he had a gun, which witnesses say wasn't there and of which there is no evidence. He was killed for reading a book while waiting in his car for his son to come out, which is apparently a capital crime in North Carolina, so dangerous as to require summary execution. Police have attacked the protesters. Someone has been shot though as of this writing there weren't a lot of details. The victim is in critical condition.

* I went to bed ridiculously early Monday night with a stabbed in the stomach sort of feeling. It was all fever dreams and lost people, but the long sleep did me good, I think. I'm still achieving bare minimum, but it is an acceptable level of function. I discovered on waking that thanks to your kindness, we are sorted financially for the month if we just wait out money transfer times, which is good news as I ran out of the secondary lung meds last weekish. I informed squirrel we were rescued when he came out for his dinner. The Terror was very bored with me being in bed so much. I awoke to a living room strewn with shredded paper and to discover he'd kidnapped the Borg Cube from the Gothmas tree. All has been set to rights now though.

Thanks again, to our benefactors.

* Fear the Walking Dead: I loathe Madison and Nick. They are so annoying upper middle class white American bulldozing through endangering everyone else because they assume they know better than the people actually living there. I suppose this is the point, but I really wish the show focused on the rest of the cast instead of treating them like main characters.

* TNG 4 Rewatch:

- The Best of Both Worlds. Ouch, the mirror scenes with Guinan and the Captain, each sitting before a battle. Honorius and Picard; Picard and Riker. Ouch, the graveyard of Federation ships. Watching Locutus is painful still. I kept thinking that data hacking Picard here made like 100x more sense than Independence Day.

- Family. I really do appreciate that they make clear that time has passed since the Borg battle and that captain Picard has PTSD symptoms. At the same time Deanna picking that way at him wanting to visit family on shore leave brings me close to violence. She seems to be pathologizing and deliberately undermining what I would consider a pretty understandable decision. You'd think she'd want him to take time off to rest after being violated on every level like that. From the dialog it's clear he's been undergoing intensive therapy for the PTSD, so it's not like he's running out on early recovery stages. He's improved enough to leave the ship and like a bunch of the rest of the crew, he wants to go home for a visit. Why would a competent psychiatrist be against a man trying to mend fences with his brother, especially at a time when that man might need a support network outside his command structure? Seems to me reaching out to family would be encouraged not discouraged. It seemed to me working through bits of trauma arguing with his brother sounds therapeutic to me, and yes, that includes them having it out after a lifetime of bottling it up. I think this is another instance of Deanna Troi bringing her issues to therapy instead of doing what's best for the patient. Seems to me Picard was doing exactly what was best for him as part of the healing.

I kind of love Worf's parents.

Add in the A, B, and C plot (Wesley's recording from his dead father), and this whole episode is about how men need family support in times of stress, which is a beautiful thing to see, especially as Worf is about as aggressively masculine as it is possible to be and Picard is the quintessential captain most of the time. It's good to see men like that shown dealing with trauma and being vulnerable with loved ones.

This is another one that is all too timely here in the 21st century with it's record high suicide rate for military veterans, and yes, that's a personal issue for me, given who I lost that way. It is so incredibly important that Picard cries, that Picard has nightmares, that Picard is getting help and not issolating himself. It's so important that Worf lets himself open up for the parents that clearly love him, and yes, it's important that coming to terms with his father's death is a process for Wesley. I have often said that grief is a marathon and not a sprint.
