I saw it the first time when it was brand new in a theater on a double date, sandwiched between the guy I was dating and the guy i had been dating a week or two before. (My history of staying friends after where possible goes waaaay back). I remember the surprisingly loud rustle of fabric as every guy in the theater crossed their legs at once during the leech scene. (In retrospect, worst date movie ever). Most of all, I was haunted and remain haunted by River Phoenix' performance in the bit about the milk money. Oh, the details were different, but that mix of scapegoating, gas lighting, betrayal, hypocrisy, and cruelty was the story of my childhood. I was sixteen and still relearning how to be human. You might have thought looking at me from the outside at the age the character were, that I was some sort of Gordie/Teddy Jekyll and Hyde, but I was always and likely always be a Chris Chambers on the inside. I think that scene was the first time outside of Harold and Maude that I'd seen anything even remotely relevant to my childhood represented. (I know, Another Country had been out twoish years at this point, but I didn't see it until I discovered it in a video store the next year, and Dead Poet's came out end of senior year). I don't often mourn celebrities, but between his performance in this nd Private Idaho River Phoenix broke my heart twice with his acting and a third time for all that lost potential, for all the things he might have done and been if his life hadn't spiraled like that. It still makes me ache that someone who likely would have been the among the greatest actors of my generation died in such a stupid, wasteful way.

* I am significantly more critical of the original, but agree with the main points. "Preacher: A Comic Fan's Perspective:" http://www.fandomfollowing.com/preacher-comic-fans-perspective/

* TNG Rewatch, Season 2: The season 2 Rewatch is turning out rather a shambles as a bunch of episodes are missing and I need to press on to clear space for the Olympics, so I'm watching what I have and making note of what's missing. As a result, it's more random thoughts than proper analysis so far. Things like: Wow, Pulaski really is the female Bones!

What's interesting, is that the random selection that I happen to have for early season 2 still manages to have two through lines. The first is the Picard/Polaski struggle to learn to deal with each other, of which I got enough snap shots for the arc to work. The second is the issue of the personhood of Data. The underlying issues are surprisingly well seeded, with incidents like Polaski mispronouncing his name and when politely corrected saying something like "What does it matter!" and the various ways outsiders will call him "it" or talk about him like he's not there or ask humans questions in front of him that should be addressed to him. As a person who is both trans and disabled it simultaneously gives me the shivers and want to hit people. These are the real life ways we are frequently dehumanized, in some cases in preparation for killing us or after the fact as reasons our murders shouldn't count. It's very realistic when it comes to the way cis and able bodied people try to deny us out humanity to justify the horrific things they do. The Measure of Man hurts to watch because it is fundamentally about whether Starfleet can legally do what ever they want with Data including kill him or if he is indeed a person with a right to make his own decisions and have bodily autonomy. If that doesn't strike you as incredibly relevant to American politics in 2016 across multiple modalities, then you aren't paying attention. The villain side of this enlargement is closing clinics in states all across the country on the grounds that elderly white evangelical politicians should make medical decisions for women they've never met because fetuses are fully human, but women aren't. The murders of Poc, Disabled people, Transfolk, and particularly trans women of colour are routinely not investigated, or if investigated, not brought to court, and murders let go or given slaps on the wrist based on arguments made in the same dehumanizing terms. Guinan directly references slavery in response to data's position. I honestly don't know how to feel about this particular fictionalized version. I do think this is sure as fuck the way RL humans behave on the regular, and it's well executed within the idiom of the Trekverse, but at the same time...? Yeah. The big issue of appropriation of rl persecution of all these groups, and this is a show that erased LGB folk and completely botched trans issues. It's hard to watch, that's for sure, maybe on more levels than it's meant to be.
