* I have been thinking a lot about why I'm so distressed at Prince's death. I know, I haven't written about him, possibly ever. I think it's because his life and music were such a powerful and pervasive part of who I was and who I became that it's hard to express properly in words and the memories woven into the music for me are so layered and complex. I think it's because I have no idea who I'd be now if I hadn't listened to him then.
I just keep thinking about the way he was not just a lifeline, but vision of how to move forward and do better than survive. I looked at him and for the first time I realized that I could take my different and make it beautiful. I could wear it proudly and confident. I could design an image that expressed who I was and where it outside. His music was the soundtrack of my teens. I had all the albums and played them over and over up in my attic. The music and the image together taught me how I could make myself free. He was a big part of me deciding from henceforth my life would be art. he played a huge part in how i processed my trauma. He played a huge part in me striding forth with no fucks to give about what other people thought about me, my gender expression, my sexuality. Because of him I really learned to revel and delight in my self. he was the most important light leading me out of an incredibly dark place, and there has been so much joy in life because of it.
How can one possibly put into words how grateful I am still for his music and his life. It gave me a gift that can never be repayed, but only passed on.
It is a horrible thought that he isn't out there being his genius, wonderful, gloriously peculiar self somewhere in the world.
