* I watched "And Then There Were None." It took longer than one might expect because I got so excited when I saw who all was in it all together in one place, I actually had to turn it off and go calm down so I could pay attention to the actual acting. Look, I never claimed not to be dorky about these things. It was just such an embarrassment of riches acting wise, and the set designs, costumes, and cinematography were brilliant.

I do have a confession to make before we continue: I've always been a Lord Peter Whimsey person instead of an Agatha Christie person. Mystery novels were everywhere when I was growing up. My Great Grand mother loved them; my Grandmother loved them, my mother's Aunts loved them. my Mother consumed them at an impressive rate. They would pass them back and forth in grocery bags since the women of my mother's family were all both clever and fast readers ans this was cheap and efficient. As a result I tried (often, so very often) with Christie over the years. She lead a fascinating life and was groundbreaking in a whole lot of ways. I want to like her, but the books have always left me some degree of cold. It's the same with Arthur Conan Doyle (who's stories I have literally taught to 8th graders, concealing all the while my lack of enthusiasm). In the case of both authors, I like them better in quality adaptation for the most part. There is a lot of interesting stuff embedded in Christie, by way of class commentary and the like, but I think the problem is I find her characters unappealing, even the ones I'm supposed to like, like Hercule Poirot. (With Doyle, it's generally the stiffness of the prose. No, it's not me disliking 19th century literature, because I love a lot of 19th century authors and am comfortable with he narrative flavour. Look, there is nothing wrong with people liking Doyle or Christie. It is flat out a matter of personal preference and taste, and as I've mentioned, I loved Gran and Grammy and the Aunts and rather wished I could take to Christie as I admired them. I would not have tried so often over the years if I didn't think the people who do like them had reason to feel that way).

I just want to be clear about my biases here. While on paper I look like part of the target audience, I'm not quite, while at the same time not being someone apt to reject it out of hand.

When I say this is not only by far the most fun I've ever had watching a Christie adaption, including the prestige "Orient Express" of my childhood (which I should probably watch again), but good compared to most of the things I've watched in the last year, it means something. I had trouble pulling myself off the sofa to do other necessary things like making food and sleeping. I love Vikings, but I still have no trouble pausing it for sleep. I'd not have traded this for Black sails, but it's close, quality wise. I admit, I came in part for Mr. Turner's abs, the cast list in general, and the haircuts, but I was mesmerized by the whole production. It was very tense and tightly put together for all the eye candy views of the island and the house and the people. The acting was spot on brilliant and brought life to characters I thought rather stock and wooden when I read this as a teen. The plot itself is beautifully twisted and I do love a mystery in which every one is guilty. (Is this the original Cardassian mystery novel?) I was nigh overwhelmed by how well this was done. It found the bones of the story and wedded them to an aesthetic that works and an impressive ensemble of skilled acting talents. It did not erase the incredibly ugly things the characters had done (TW: for graphic homophobic violence, domestic violence, racism), though I do find making the man who perpetrated a racist war crime into a romantic lead unpalatable on a number of levels. I think part of why it worked so well was the people making it knew we would be sitting there rather routing for the characters to be bumped off even as we invested in the whole wanting to solve it part. Everyone is a different flavour of horrible and it raises all sorts of questions about whether it is better to be a manster who openly admits to being a monster or a monster in denial, and whether or not people who commit crimes like these can be in any way redeemable. (Except for Mrs. Rogers, who struck me as a victim to her husband.

On a personal note, watching Burn Gorman's performance, I found myself thinking of the man who killed my Skye. It was unsettling for me, the way things overlapped towards the end and my rather complicated response to that.

So there are caveats you can likely guess from the trigger warning list, but this really was an amazing production, and I'd love to see more adaptations of her better books done on this level.
