* Never gender police. This should go without saying, but sadly it doesn't. I get it, sometimes people think they are helping. They see someone who's presentation is ambiguous or not conforming to stereotyped binary roles going into a gendered space, usually a rest room, and they are trying to save that person embarrassment. The problem is that this is not helping. trans people and butch lesbians in particular get harassed in bathrooms and occasionally arrested or thrown out of stores and restaurants. This is a real fear that people have about actual oppressive shit that happens in the world and can be really triggering to people. Some of you may remember it's happened to me. If it's going to happen to someone, I'd rather it be me. I'm assertive and comfortable standing up for myself. (Some would say too comfortable. I terrified Skye early in our relationship by stomping a block and a half away to yell at a frat party for blasting "Rocking Robin" for 15 minutes straight after midnight on a Sunday so loud it was interfering with my attempts to sleep. he was sure I was about to get my ass kicked....) I'm non-binary and I don't have triggers around gender stuff. I'm perfectly comfortable arguing back when challenged on my right to pee. BTW, the Neptune Theater sent a very nice apology about that and did sensitivity training for ushers on not hassling trans folk using restrooms in response to my complaint a couple years ago.
Yes, I get it's well meaning. I really do. I've had a person I'm conversing with accidentally follow me right into a gendered restroom not matching their gender. At my first college they did a renovation in the coffee shop that involved switching the genders on the restrooms. Not only have I stepped into the wrong one out of habit, but I witnessed faculty do it. A lot. I've dealt with drunk people at my first two colleges who wandered into the wrong rest room get angry at me for walking in on them. You know what though? It's not a big deal. The person generally looks around, realises they are in the wrong room, says something like "Ooops! Excuse me," and leaves. It's like 5 seconds of embarrassment. Unless you are dealing with a drunk and then it's a minute or two of argument requiring a point at the door sign. Not a big deal.
But for a lot of trans people? Getting challenged in a rest room is a big fucking deal. It can be terrifying. It can be a panic attack. It can be a flashback. It can fuck up their night or possibly their week. For all that other person knows, it could be the prelude to a physical attack or an arrest or a major unpleasantness of a variety of types. That five seconds of embarrassment you think you might be about to save someone weighs at nothing compared to the real threat that challenge can be to a vulnerable segment of the population and triggering something like that in someone who just wants to take a piss isn't worth it.
Don't do it. Mind your own business when it comes to restrooms and locker rooms. Everyone is happier that way.
