* I got one trick or treater. An adult man presumably coming home from a party at 1:36 AM. I gave him candy anyway. I never turn anyone away, and this is why I have candy even though no one who doen't live here is likely to knock. I feed my dead. I feed the living.

* Apparently I still rather like Insurrection. It's basically a Big Screen TNG episode, but a good TNG episode. I think the ToS based movies were best when they were more like episode only larger (II, IV, and the middle of VII), and at their worst when they were trying to be too big and mystical (I, V). VI could have been really, really good if someone remembered things like Spock is supposed to be really intelligent, so letting the audience guess what is going on an hour before he does is a problem, or the whole not really having worked out what they wanted Klingons to be, or the illogical or the plot holes, or the badly pasted together dialog, or.... The basic idea was sound though and some of the parts worked. If the writing had been better, we would have loved it instead of dismissing it before we left the theater, picking it apart for a week then forgetting it. I think in retrospect that Insurrection was not quite large enough, but the writing and characterization was sound. The Borg one is a classic, and as my ex and I had it on VHS, I've seen it a lot, so I'm skipping it this watch through. My memories of Nemesis are vague and it will likely be a while before I get to it, what with my backlog.
* It turns out the library has The Hollow Crown, which does Richard II, both Henry IVs, and Henry V and has the likes of Patrick Stewart and Tom Hiddleston in it. I do not like Henry IV part 1 at ll and I'm not fond of part II. I know, I know. I'm likely the only one on the planet who hates Henry IV. It's just a lot of unpleasant bullying and general assholery to me. Beautifully written assholery, but it's not something I watch for fun, but I am promised Hiddleston, so I may give it a try after I watch the ILL next in queue.
Anyway, I do have a soft spot for Richard II. There are just some gorgeous bits of writing in it, and every reading or watching is haunted for me by the image of the real Richard II as a teenager riding out valiantly against all advice to talk to the Great Peasant revolt and talking them into going home. Seriously it was an act of physical courage that boggles the mind and I can only imagine how eloquent he must have been given how justly angry they were and and all the nobles they'd beheaded and how little protection he had if they wanted to snipe him with long bows. The real man was complicated and often difficult and a mix of qualities that is hard to capture and historians argue about. The play is simpler than the real life events or the real life Henry IV, but Shakespeare did wrestle with Richard's complications and contradictions and there are a lot of interesting moments not just for him, but several of the other characters, like John of Gaunt, who was RL fascinating in his own right, here beautifully played by John of Gaunt. The people making this film did so many beautiful things with the locations, and some really interesting things with costumes and imagery, though I think the Christ imagery in particular was little heavy handed. I had a fun time spotting English actors I like in the cast. The Richard though, oh the Richard! Ben Winslow was beautiful in this, complex and messy and otherwordly and Kingly. It took a scene or two to get used to what he was doing, but damned if it won't be hard to find someone else doing it as well.
