* A white police officer in North Carolina violently beat up a black teenager in a school, throwing the child around like a stunt dummy instead of a human being as a punishment for refusing to leave a desk. He was a competitive powerlifter, choking and beating a teenaged girl. Pet his mamma is proud of him.
Look, I used to teach. You try not to let it get to the point where a kid has to go to the office, but it happens. Every now and then, a kid won't go. You call admin and they send the principle or vice principle down to sort it. Once in eight years did I have it go further than that and even then, he just grabbed the back of the desk and dragged it into the hall without touching or harming the child.
Not once did it cross my mind that one of my kids should be arrested for refusing to go to the office. How is that illegal? Assholish, yes! Illegal no! Somehow I doubt they'd be calling the cops if that was a white child refusing to go to the office. Somehow I doubt that if that teacher and admin were any good there would have been a police officer involved at all. Arrests should be saved for actual crimes, like sexual assault. There have been a number a sexual assaults in schools in this country over the past decade, and yet somehow those are not properly investigated and they do not generally arrest those boys. That is a real crime and the criminals who do it should absolutely be arrested, but for classroom discipline infractions? Hell no! When I was teaching the goal was to solve as much as possible right there between you and the child in question. If I had to call for back up? I considered that a serious failure. It is way better to have the relationship with the kids and the establish authority to get them to comply yourself. So when I see the stats on them arresting children of colour, particularly in the south for minor classroom infractions it's pretty clearly about racism and the prison industrial complex, but it's also about really bad teachers and administrators. I good teacher would never call a cop unless a child was immediate danger of life and limb. A good teacher periodically has to call Child Protective services because of danger to the students. A good teacher turns up at the end of the day to talk to the school counselor about someone's eating disorder, or cutting, or drug use, or possible suicidal ideation. A good teacher will call for help to protect students, usually from themselves and occasionally each other. I do not see how calling in a violent policeman to savagely beat a girl in front of her classmates is somehow helping that student.
It is a teacher’s job first and foremost to keep those children under zir care safe.

* I spent way to long yesterday trying to sew my sheets back together. I spent way to long today trying to sort out a lightbulb issue with the pumpkin display involving a three way bulb switch and a stripped philips head screw. I should just order new bulbs from amazon, but I haven't money for it, and if I did I'd have bought margarine and fish food.
* Hector Update: Poor little guy can't get volume on his complaints (he is a birmin), and no longer has the stamina for four hour sleep protests, having to take a nap himself after about fifteen minutes of sporadic attacks on my head and yelling into the ear hole, but he's otherwise pretty much back to normal erxcept for the occationally hind leg wobble. It's only a matter of time 'til the next stroke, but his quality of life is pretty good.
* I am seriously considering dropping out of watching the show. If I weren't playing on GoB I would have been out early in Five. I'm just not convinced I can do it anymore.
