I could have sworn the blue dress was the one in the portrait, but someone who can afford to see it again should check. It certainly struck me as the same style and period as Lucille's wardrobe generally. Remember the Parents were both fashionable and profligate. they loved travel and seemed exactly the sort to own expensive heavily saturated ultra fashionable fabrics. I admit, I looked at the portrait and the next cut to Lucille in what I think is her Mother's dress and thought "she is replacing her mother, whom she likely killed to get that ring." I know the focus of the shot is the ring, but I looked at the silhouette and the neckline detail and it just clicked. I still wonder what happened to the father exactly.
We know from Edith's comment Lord Sharpe's clothes were at least a decade out of style which might mean they are his father's. I'm not as good at menswear after the high tight trousers went out of fashion earlier in the 19th, so i couldn't spot date it while watching, but it would make logical sense. When last they had money, there parents were alive. They would have had no adult sized fashionable clothes, particularly for him, given his age at the time of their mother's death. What money they had went into trying to revive the mine and luring new revenue streams. They would need nice clothes to mingle. Him being out of date shows less than for her because women's fashion changes so quickly and the silhouette at end of century was completely different from what she is wearing. Look at how she stands out in the party scene. It's not just the red: it's the cut. Speaking of the dress, I love how her lacing make it look a little like sewn muscle down the back, and the choice of colour makes me think of her mother's ghost.
There is definitely a strangling parasitic quality about Lucille. I wonder if the Mother wasn't a little like that with the father and eventually Lucille in her illness. I wonder if husband Sharpe isn't a distorted mirror of his father, spending all they have on the machine and not pleasure, utterly twined with Lucille the way his father was with the mother to the point that the house fell to ruin and the children were ignored and neglected for years. Father Sharpe only ever saw Momma Sharpe. Husband Sharpe only sees Lucille and his machines until he falls in love with Edith and even then he can't separate until it was far to late.
My assumption was that the Lucille started poisoning her Mother when she broke her leg, and the poison aged her prematurely, but even so I still think the timeline is deliberately slightly squishy around that.
I wonder how young he was when she started with him. I was assuming well before the murder, which would likely leave him damaged and conflicted and isolated, especially in a society that does not talk about or acknowledge that kind of abuse.
Someone clever has pointed out that the dog is a papillion and may symbolize her innocence, which I agree with. After all the black moths eat butterflies.
