* I’ve never much liked John W. Campbell for all the praise heaped on him from the old guard. I am not at all surprised to learn he was a racist and sexist who barred stories with black or woman protagonists from the things he edited. How did it take all these decades for me to hear about this terrible behavior? Why did none of those panegyrics I grew up with mention his racism and misogyny. My instinctive discomfort with the colonialist feel of his work feels pretty justified in retrospect.

Lovecraft’s face needs to not be on an award urgently, but Campbell’s name needs to go too. It’s time to move the awards for our genre into the 21st century.

Have you been reading George R.R. Martin's take on the Hugo situation? He, despite being very angry at the 'hijacking' and against it entirely (and having written thousands of words on the subject this last week), makes a very good case how voting no award is a bad option.

Of course, I'm personally against it as I happen to know two of the best short story finalists, and I'd really like to see one of them win. (Kary English and Annie Bellet. The latter, by the way, is a very liberal lesbian. I imagine Vox Day didn't realize this when he included her on the Rabid Puppies slate, but Brad Torgersen definitely did on the Sad Puppies side, as she and Brad are friends.)
