Unfortunately, there is weird racism in the popular press versions I saw, so I'm going to wait for results to link. It'll be a really useful bit of data, given the controversies over Greenland's history, so I thought I'd mention it anyway.

* Grim: I hate the trope where a woman gets power and instead of embracing it and learning to use it like every male character ever, immediately wants to get rid of it so she can just be normal. Fuck you, Grimm!

* I really fucked up this month. The fundamental problem is that I need about a hundred dollars to life on after essential bills are paid. (Most of this is food/litter for cats and meds for me.) Instead I start out about negative $30.00, and there is nothing to cut. So I'm already going to not pay all of a bill, thus falling behind and owing fees because I can't not feed the cats, change litter, and take lung meds in particular. Then I fucked up twice. 1. I miscounted cat food so had to dip into car insurance money. I was supposed to pay a bill off the credit card I just paid, only fucked up with online payment and it came out of the bank account. There goes the whole car insurance payment. Plus my car renewal came and there is no money for it. So now I'm about $150.00 negative for the month, and it's only getting worse, since the car insurance will auto-withdraw, meaning escalating overdraw fees, plus Hector will need more food and i will need more meds at some point. I need to throw together an ebay and hope it will cover postage plus car insurance at least. Gah! (This is the difference between the $265.00 rent a month and the $486.00 they surprised me with without telling me of the change. It seems a small difference, but it was literally a matter of survival to me. We can't save anything for the tax payments either, but that's a whole separate panic.).

Lest you think I am extravagant, remember SSI is $695.00 a month, an amount Republicans insist is "lavish."

I'll hold off on cashing the check. Let me know when/if it becomes safe to do so.

And let me check current checking balance. I may be able to lend you some money to at least avoid some of the extra fees.

While that trope is more common with woman characters -- even among more progressive shows like Buffy, Xena, and Charmed -- it's also quite common among men as well. Aang in Avatar, Nathan Petrelli in Heroes. Duncan in Highlander. Scott from Teen Wolf spent most of the first season trying to be cured. Sam in Reaper. Clark in Smallville. Chuck Bartowski for the first two seasons of Chuck. Half the mutants in the X-men movies. Miles Morales in the new Ultimate Spider-man comics, he had his powers for months before Peter Parker died, but kept them to himself because he wanted to live a normal life. Heck, even in Grimm... I've only seen the first few episodes (I really need to catch up), but in the episodes I've seen the main character does /not/ want to be a Grimm and he wants to just live a normal life, and be a normal cop.

Now that I'm thinking about it, though, the opposite trope is definitely more male-leaning. Korra in Legend of Korra, Katara in Avatar, Ahsoka in Clone Wars, Root in Person of Interest, Willow and Faith in Buffy, Phoebe and Billy in Charmed, Molly in the Runaways comics, and Cassie/Wonder Girl in DC comics are the only female characters I can think of who wholeheartedly embraced their powers right from day one. That, I'd guess, is the problem. We have too many Peter Petrellis and not enough Korras.

Thankfully, many of the female characters who start out wanting a normal life eventually accept (though not necessarily embrace) their power. (Buffy, Paige and Prue in Charmed, etc.) Still, I can definitely see where we need more of the latter.

Sorry to ramble, my brain just dives in whenever subjects like tropes come up, and story analysis. It's the storyteller in me. :)

Ah, I haven't seen a lot of the examples in your first paragraph, but you are right. I completely forgot Peter Petrelli, mostly because I've forgotten the details, but there is no excuse for me forgetting Highlander and the X-Men movies.

Women rejecting their powers is nearly as constant an element of supernatural romance and urban fantasy as the love triangle involving and underpowered women and two way more powerful and experienced men. I see so damned much of it, it exhausts me.

You are right, there are a few male exceptions. You are also right about the other half of it, that "We have too many Peter Petrellis and not enough Korras." It really is a problem, and i'd don't think I'd object if there were gender parity on both sides of the sea saw, but there isn't and now i get queasy whenever I see yet another women feeling burdened by empowerment and expanded agency.

I clearly did not think long enough, nor word carefully enough.

Thank you for pointing that out.
